A decompression chamber (built according to technical standard [DIN]), for the therapy of specific illnesses which can occur while diving activities (diving related disorders, e.g. decompression sickness) received the “Kuramathi Medical Centre“ as a special feature. It is at the present time the biggest available pressure chamber in the Maldives. It houses four persons. Beyond exists the possibility to supply major diving accidents in the decompression chamber with intensive care.

The decompression chamber is also available for HBO-therapy of other illnesses or emergencies simultaneously, e.g. for the treatment of carbon monoxide poisoning, gas gangrene, non-healing wounds a.s.o. In addition, the Medical centre of Kuramathi is equipped with modern diagnostic divices for ECG, X-ray, blood analysis and audiometry (audible listening test). A stationary treatment is even possible in the case of necessity. For this purpose, a small ward is available with two beds.

The clinic offers a 24-hour emergency supply which does not only limit to diving related disorders. Among other things, a respirator, infusion apparatus and a patient monitor is available for this. The equipment with medicine and further medical instrumentation corresponds to international standards and allows a comprehensive medical supply to all emergencies.

Two German doctors are employed at the clinic, one of them is a specialist for diving accidents and emergency medicine. The other one is a general practitioner and a specialist for Ear-Nose-Throat diseases.

A nurse and a chamber operator support the doctors in their work. The clinic also looks medically after the entire staff of the hotels of the island. Regular consulting hours are arranged daily where both doctors are available.

Modern EDP and information technology support the work of personnel at the clinic. There is E-Mail or Internet technology available to consult colleagues in the case of difficult problems or to use medical databases.
