Werfen Ice Caves Tour from Salzburg

Werfen Ice Caves Tour from Salzburg

werfen-ice-caves-tour-from-salzburg-in-salzburg-austriaBOOK THIS TOUR – CLICK HERE!

From £30.66
Location: Salzburg, Austria
Rating: 4.5 star based on 34 reviews

Visit the largest Ice Caves in the world on this memorable afternoon trip from Salzburg. Your tour meanders south along the picturesque Salzach Valley towards the idyllic village of Werfen, taking in historic monuments, sheer mountain passes and the most imposing castle in middle Europe, Castle Werfen – made famous in the movie “Where Eagles Dare”.

Inclusions:

* Day trip (destination A to B)
* Hotel pickup included
* Led by a local guide
* Conducted in English

To reach the caves, you combine walking (a safe and wonderful way to enjoy the Alps close up) and a cable car. The Eisriesenwelt is the world’s largest ice cave.

You will enter this natural wonder with your guide, who will explain the labyrinths of large caverns, mysterious ice figures and give many added tales of adventure, to make your experience unforgettable. There is more to this cave than its echo!

Important Note:  You will need walking shoes, warm clothes and should be prepared for uphill walking. The climb to the ice caves is 134 meters, which is equivalent to climbing the stairs in a high block of apartments. Each individual should decide for themselves whether he or she is physically able to complete the climb. The beauty and breathtaking dimensions of the cave provide plenty of reward for the effort! Although the speed of the guided tour is tailored to the group, we advise those with serious walking difficulties or heart circulation problems not to visit the caves.

Schedule

Departure Point: Bus terminal at Mirabellplatz or centrally located Salzburg hotels

Departure Time: 1:00pm – Hotel pickups commence prior to this time, exact pickup time will be advised on reconfirmation.

Return Details: Concludes at Mirabellplatz bus terminal at approximately 6:00pm

The ice cave was beautiful. It is very dark and you need to keep close together so you can see where you’re walking, but the guide lights up certain parts of the cave with a torch, and it just looks amazing. You’re technically not allowed to take photos in the cave although we all did! My only criticism is that our guide pressured the group into walking up and down the Alps as quickly as possible due to ‘time constraints’. However there is plenty of time to walk, and it is a much more enjoyable experience if you do just take your time. We walked briskly on the way up and we were knackered despite being young, fairly fit adults. We decided just to take our time on the way back down and it certainly made the difference. The cafe doesn’t accept cards, so don’t get caught short without some money! I would definitely say that it is worth seeing.

This is a wonderful tour. It was a small group which gave us the opportunity to get to know our guide. She was well informed. The only draw back was that we signed up for an English speaking tour, but some of the group didn’t speak English so the guide had to say everything in English and then in German, but the trip is absolutely worth that little inconvenience.

I really enjoyed the salt mine tour as well as the drive through the Bavarian mountains and would even do this tour again if I am lucky enough to go back to Salzburg. It is a bit cool once you get into the mine, so I would recommend a sweatshirt or light jacket to wear underneath the coveralls they give you. The only reason I didnt give the tour five stars was because of the stop at Berchtesgaden, Germany. You only get 45 minutes, but the tour guide recommends you stop for lunch at one of the cafes. Knowing how slow European restaurants are at least compared to the US, I went directly to one of the cafes so I would have the full 45 minutes. Well, that was not even enough time! The food had just started to come out when the 45 minutes were up and we were all due back at the bus. We asked the waitresses to wrap up our food, and not knowing that I understand a bit of German, the waitresses started complaining about Americans. So, during the stop in Berchtesgaden I would highly recommend that you just stroll through town and maybe get a snack I know there was an ice cream vendor around. Trying to go to a caf is not only stressful but a huge waste of time!

We had a great tour guide on our private tour but I was expecting to actually stop and go to see many more spots close up rather than just hear about them from the van. I.e.-going into the Mirabella palace park and up to the cemetery – We had to do these on our own afterwards which I expected to do on our private tour that I had booked for this reason. Our guide was excellent and very enjoyable to have for the 4 hours. We unfortunately had lots of rain but he still made our time enjoyable.

We were lucky in that the day we went was sunny weather-wise, until we were returning on the bus. Consequently the morning in the mountains seeing the salt mine was excellent. This had amazing views from the Eagle’s nest top. If you aren’t at the top.. you’ll miss something! Our guide spoke very fluent English, and had mammoth knowledge. We did an upgrade to the full day tour 8 hrs, which includes Eagel’s Nest, Salt mines and KonningSee lake. I would recommend that, if you have the time.

We LOVED this show and dinner. It was great to have the singers and musicians performing together…this was a surprise to us, we’d thought it was only musicians playing instruments…both were fabulous! The dinner was really great too. The only thing that was disappointing was the time it took to get our bill settled. We were there until after 11pm.
