Your Exclusive Luxury Private Island

The Island Hideaway at Dhonakulhi Maldives, Spa Resort and Marina is a luxury boutique resort situated on the privately-owned uninhabited virgin island of Dhonakulhi, North Maldives, Indian Ocean. The resort was opened on 1st August 2005 with 6 types of spectacular guest villas. The marina is the first of its kind in the Maldives. The Island is a haven of peace, tranquillity and serenity. Island Hideaway is one of the very few resorts [currently 3] in the Haa Alifu Atoll.

Dhonakulhi is a large crescent-shaped island with a beach length of some 1.4 kilometres on each side, a width of 500 metres and land area of 234,000 m² – equivalent to 28 football pitches. The crystal clear turquoise waters of the shallow waist-deep lagoon surrounding the Island stretch as far as the eye can see. The Island is unique in its reef formation, the reef system it sits on having a natural channel splitting it in two distinct parts, and thereby forming a natural harbour for the marina. In addition to coconut trees, banana trees and rubber-tree-like vegetation, the Island is covered by uniquely rich dense bushy vegetation.

The Island Hideaway – Philosophy and Environment

Nature and luxury blend harmoniously together at The Island Hideaway. The entire Island and lagoon is the exclusive and private domain of guests. Guest villas are some of the largest of any resort in the Maldives. These majestic chalets are tucked into the lush greenery and scattered along the beach-line some 30 metres apart from one another, providing the ultimate in privacy. All of the Island’s villas boast breathtaking panoramic views over the beautiful turquoise lagoon and Indian Ocean. The designs of furniture, fixtures and fittings are a rustic celebration of nature having used custom-made hand-finished natural materials throughout. At the same time, however, guests can indulge all their senses in the magic of this Maldivian Island and enjoy every exclusive luxury which todays sophisticated globetrotters have come to expect.

Despite the extensive facilities and services at The Island Hideaway, barely 5% of the Island and lagoon have been utilised, thereby leaving 95% in its original state, untouched by the hand of man.

The Island Hideaway is a member of the Small Luxury Hotels of the World [SLH], representing the most luxurious independent, exclusive hotels and resorts around the world.

Dive in Uncharted Waters with Meridis

If the setting above sea level has all the ingredients for holiday heaven, the spectacle awaiting you below the water’s surface is even more spectacular. The Maldives is famed for its rare underwater beauty. The profusion of psychedelic colours and the abundance and variety of life underwater have fascinated divers and snorkellers since Maldives was first discovered as a diving destination. This Island is situated on an Atoll that is at the moment untapped and unexplored by the diving world. This gives an excellent opportunity for new divers and old alike to genuinely be able to dive where no person has ever dived before.

Operated by Meridis Dive is one of the largest dive centres in the Maldives providing the latest technology and highest quality branded diving equipment e.g. Scubapro Uwatec Nitrox regulators, Sony P9 and MX5 underwater cameras, Supercharged Seadoo Scooters and Bauer Compressors. Meridis Dive has full Nitrox diving facilities, underwater scooters, audio-visual classrooms and a dive specialist boutique. PADI-certified scuba instruction is given by multi-lingual dive experts to beginners, amateurs and experienced divers alike on the importance of safe and enjoyable diving intertwined with the protection of the marine environment.

Some of the courses and services offered by Meridis Dive are PADI Open Water [Beginner] to Assistant Instructor and all other common specialities, Nitrox, Scooter, Photography, Deep, Drift, Night, Navigation, Naturalist and Peak Performance. Meridis also offers a safe and enjoyable diving experience for children over 10 years of age, and has special “kids diving equipment” available. Children can carry out the PADI Open Water Junior course.

Some of Meridis Dive’s safety philosophies are as follows:

    • Nitrox diving
    • depth limits
    • small groups of a maximum of 4 people
    • all dives will be guided dives
    • there will be buoys for all divers
    • current check
    • easy and shallow dives

Please note that all divers are required to present an international dive certificate, log book and a medical certificate of fitness for diving.

Meridis Dive has in fact surveyed and mapped all the key diving points in the Atolls surrounding The Island Hideaway and estimate that there are at least 20 glorious dive sites that are absolutely untouched and unspoilt. There is one particular dive site where divers can expect a minimum of 15 turtles each dive, several dive sites with manta cleaning and feeding stations, 2 ship wrecks at a depth of 16 metres with fantastic fish live around, and another dive site full of fantastic table corals. Wherever you look there are lots and lots of fish! Mantas, eagle rays, grey reef sharks, turtles, big schools of tuna, barracudas, dolphins, and, and, and…..

In season there’s also the chance of seeing whale sharks and other whales!

Another first is that the Meridis experts will also offer guided snorkelling trips. The snorkelling here is also so impressive that lots of guests will be making their way to the diving school after seeing what the edge of the Dhonakulhi house reef has to offer. No sooner have you taken a few strokes, then you are snorkelling in some of the world’s most fertile waters. Just under the water’s surface you are confronted with swarms of small fish, giant turtles, metre-long mantas and slim sharks patrolling the reef. And here’s the good news: almost none of the fish are really dangerous. This means that this rich under-water world is a safe paradise for swimmers, snorkellers, diving enthusiasts.

For those that want to enjoy the view without getting wet, there’s an underwater camera in the nearby lagoon giving live views of life on the coral reef. From whale sharks to manta rays, moray eels to white tip sharks, a whole new world of magnificent marine creatures awaits you.

    “Tender Hearts” Kids’ Club

The “Tender Hearts” at Dhonakulhi is open to all kids. The 75.7 m² Kid’s Club has a playground area of 50.5 m² and offers a variety of games and activities for kids. Apart from the activities there’s also a small library with board games and bicycles to ride too.

One and Only Reethi Rah | Review by Matthew Pomroy

One and Only Reethi Rah | Review by Matthew…

Matthew Pomroy visits the stunning One and Only Reethi Rah Resort Hotel in the Maldives and Savours a little taste of paradise.

With whatever endeavour you happen to be undertaking, it’s extremely rare that everything comes together perfectly. The film might have good actors and a great director but the script might be lacking.

The singer in the band might have a stunning voice, but he looks like a drummer. The striker always finds the net, but the ‘keeper can’t catch. And so on.

For hotels, it’s the same thing, because getting everything right is close to impossible, but occasionally you get one where every aspect seems to work, from the stunning natural location right down to the smallest detail in rooms and restaurants. The One and Only Reethi Rah appears to be that hotel.

The resort has only been open for three years but already it has made a huge impact. The Condé Nast Traveller Reader’s Awards named it the best hotel in the world, but to call it just a hotel is like calling the Sistine Chapel ceiling just a big mural.

The entire island is 109 acres, with 130 stunning villas – 32 of which are over water – and each comes with your own butler, but crucially, not only are they comparable to top suites city hotels they also afford a rare secluded feel.

While other resorts in the Maldives also offer water villas, many are a little crammed and close together but the size of the island here allows the villas to be spaced out affording privacy that others just can’t offer. With around 20 metres between each villa (as well as palm trees and greenery) you get luxury in seclusion.

This is one of the reasons that so many celebrities, including royalty and world leaders, chose to come here to escape the slings and arrows, and spend their outrageous fortunes.

The staff refuse to comment on who has resided here and being a private island it is almost impossible for paparazzi to infiltrate, but others have openly endorsed the The One and Only Reethi Rah – Christian Louboutin was such a fan he designed a pair of espadrilles exclusively for the island’s tiny gift shop.

Yes, it’s that sort of place: pick up sun tan oil, copy of Vanity Fair and a pair of limited edition holiday shoes from one of the world’s top designers.

Yet despite the opulence, there’s nothing snobby about the resort. Families are welcome and there are things to do depending on whatever your mood may be.

The diving and snorkelling here is among the best on earth and boats can take you out to the most excellent reefs, but you don’t even have to get on a boat because as soon as you step into the water from the beach, the exotic fish are right there for you as bright and colourful as if created for a Pixar animated film.

More energetic activities are available but trust us, you’ll mostly want to relax and they do it here in a way that city hotels just can’t compete with.

The 1,400 sq ft of land that makes up the spa and gardens is a secluded corner of Nirvana, with 10 treatment rooms, outdoor jacuzzis, cabanas to relax in after massages, tai chi pavilion over the ocean and a big list of treatments to choose from. The Asian influence makes it feel like being in the grounds of an emperor but that adherence to being faultless spreads throughout.

Everything is spotless, especially on the coves and beaches. You don’t find a single stray cigarette butt, piece of litter or anything that could put even the slightest blemish in your picture of paradise.

The sand is white, the sea is paint-box turquoise and every element of the environment, natural or man-made, is blindingly beautiful. The design of the resort comes from world-famous architect Jean Michel Gathy who also designed The Chedi in Muscat, but this is far more spectacular and on a larger scale.

It would be easy for a hotel in such incredible surroundings to let the natural beauty sell the place, but that isn’t the case here. Despite being a tiny island in the Indian Ocean, the effort put into making sure everything is of the highest standing puts many other five-star hotels to shame.

The food and drink is a prime example. Tapasake, the Japanese restaurant, would hold its own in any major city on earth, both in terms of interior design and the food, prepared by a Japanese chef and sake master who sources the best ingredients from around the world including sushi-grade fish from Tokyo, free-range lamb from Australia and strawberries from Belgium flown in fresh.

The beach restaurant and bar, Fanditha – with carpets on the sand and day beds – offers excellent Middle-Eastern food, while the main island restaurant, where breakfast is served, has a top-class and extensive international menu. But if you want some privacy then they will organise a table on the beach for two and serve you right there.

Of course it’s not cheap, but in comparable terms of what you get for your dollar, it stands up to pretty much anywhere. All food and drinks are surprisingly well-priced, with a beer being US$7 for example, but if you want to spend big on food and fine wines this is an ideal place to do so.

Head Sommelier, Jean-Sebastien Azais, offers wine tastings and his incredible passion for perfection sums up the ethos of all who have made this an award-winning destination.

While there are over 7,000 premium labels on the island there are many fine and readily affordable wines that make up the 18,000 in stock – ensuring drinking won’t leave you financially dry. What’s more, he’s currently updating the wine cellar with more Château Lafite Rothschild vintages so it remains one of the best of any hotel on this side of the world – incredible, considering the logistical problems posed by its isolated location. Everything about the One and Only Reethi Rah is already as close as you’re ever going to find.

    • Divers who are planning on diving including those attempting the beginner’s courses, need to obtain a medical statement from your GP stating that you are fit for diving.
    • All the course prices are inclusive of DAN [Divers Alert network] insurance. This insurance covers divers for any suspected or ascertained cases of decompression sickness to a limit of 6000Euro within Maldivian territory for 21 days.
    • Please note that private courses and dives can be organized upon request with extra charges and all the courses are inclusive of DAN insurance.

    Safety

The resort conducts regular orientation dives with all guest divers as their first dive practicing the essential diving skills such as mask clearing & alternate air source use. For divers who haven’t dived for a while ‘refresher courses’ are advised.. To ensure the safety of guests the instructors have been specially trained for emergencies and always take additional safety equipment with them. Oxygen demand system, medical first aid kits, radios and mobile phones are available on all boats and the Marine Centers. Surface markers will be provided to all the divers on all the dives.

Attention to detail is naturally focused on avoiding emergencies before they occur which is achieved by limiting the dives to a depth of 30 meters and making computers mandatory at all times while disallowing decompression dives. In case of emergencies the nearest recompression chamber and clinic is only 20 minutes from Banyan Tree. In addition the resort offers special dive insurance from DAN which take care of your finances if anything does happen.

    Dive Where You Want
For certified divers the resort offer exciting dive trips to about 40 different dive sites within an hours distance from the resort. Minimum proof or certification must be shown to accept you as a certified diver prior to start diving. If you have had or currently have any medical condition, kindly obtain a written statement from a diving physician stating that you are fit to dive. Divers of or above the age of 70 or who are on medication must also obtain written consent to dive from a diving physician.

It is mandatory for all certified divers to do their initiative first dive at the house reef by way of an orientation dive. If you have not been diving for over two years it is mandatory that you renew your skills with a Refresher Course on the resorts very own house reef after a skill session in the lagoon.

You may also decide to explore the house reefs as an alternative to the boat trips. Banyan Tree is the only place in the Maldives which enables you to dive at two house reefs [Vabbinfaru and Ihuru] with a great ‘wreck’ and participate in a variety of rewarding marine conservation projects at the same time!

    Environmental conservation
Environmental conservation is a top priority in the development of all Maldivian resorts. Banyan Tree Vabbinfaru and Angsana Ihuru have been rewarded for their strong commitment to the environment with the following prestigious accolades and awards:

    This is Intelligent Luxury

Fringed by white sand beaches that shelve gently into the azure blue sea, legendary Soneva Fushi looks like a Robinson Crusoe idyll, however the finest creature comforts are always at hand. Its remoteness is central to its charm, offering the ultimate in barefoot sophistication for which the oft borrowed expression – No News No Shoes was coined. Welcome to a luxurious experience in which the natural reality of the destination unites understated yet sophisticated style. This is Intelligent Luxury.

    No News No Shoes

Laid back and chilled out. That’s Soneva Fushi. The all-year-round comfortable tropical temperature requires only light and natural fabrics. Polo-style shirts and summer dresses and sarongs are ideal. A jacket or wrap may be suitable for winter, when temperatures can be as low as 23 degrees Celsius. Shoes are not practical on the soft sandy jungle paths, so we suggest that, like your hosts, they be avoided. Laundry service is offered, but there is no dry cleaning.

    Accommodation

Soneva Fushi offers just 65 accommodations, which capture the very essence of a luxurious castaway fantasy. The Jungle Reserve and the two Retreats offer the premier accommodation. Each villa opens to its very own stretch of white sand beach just a few steps away, whilst many also include Private Sea Water Swimming Pools. Each bathroom extends to a private garden, whilst utmost care is given to the environment.

    Me Dhuniye Restaurant [Reservations recommended]

Soneva Fushi evolves again to bring something new to the table. Always looking to enhance the culinary experiences we are pleased to introduce a Peruvian and Japanese fusion culinary adventure. The menu draws heavily on classic Japanese food with South American influences.

The main inspiration was to focus on the amazing quality of the raw ingredients already abundant in the Maldives such as the local fish delivered daily to the jetty along with some of the organic produce from the garden. To ensure we got the authenticity correct we were pleased to be able to work with Toshiro Konishi, Japanese born who immigrated to Peru in 1975. His restaurant in Lima has for many years attracted positive reviews and acclaim as one of the best Sushi restaurants in the world. You can now try some of his signature dishes and an array of subtle assorted Sashimi, a variety of hand made Niguiri sushi or Maki sushi rolls. Try Toshiro’s special Peruvian Ceviche’s.

With these tempting dishes we have also brought to you a selection of the finest Japanese sakes to enjoy, chilled or warm, plum wines and a fine selection of South American wines for your pleasure from Argentina and Chile.Me Dhuniye, is located on the sunset side of the island and is open for dinner.

The Soneva Fushi and the Environment

Sustainable development has become a guiding principle for governments, businesses, NGOs and the public sector. In recent years there has also been a growing interest in what is now termed ‘eco-tourism’, as the hospitality industry responds to increased consumer awareness of environmental issues. Travellers and guests now expect hotels and resorts to have policies and practices that: promote sustainable waste management; reduce energy use; encourage sustainable purchasing; and minimise carbon emissions.

Tourism is one of the largest and fastest growing industries and has significant social and environmental impacts, not only locally but globally. In order to develop in a sustainable way resorts should not consume renewable resources, such as forests (and timber), soil, water and fish stocks faster than they are replenished. Also, non-renewable resources (fossil fuels, minerals and ores) should not be exploited before renewable substitutes can be found. Similarly, pollutants, in the form of solid, liquid and gaseous emissions and greenhouse gasses in particular should not be released faster than they can be recycled within the ecosystem. Sustainable development is based on the premise that current needs are met without compromising the ability of future generations to meet their needs.

Sustainability means doing things better – not doing without. Since the opening of Six Senses’ flagship resort in 1995, Soneva Fushi has made sustainability a priority, without compromising the experience and expectations of guests. Indeed, the resort has demonstrated that luxury and minimal environmental impact are compatible. The company’s core purpose “to create innovative and enriching experiences in a sustainable environment” as well as the Soneva philosophy of “Intelligent Luxury” indicate how much emphasis is placed on providing the ultimate holiday experience, while at the same time being socially and environmentally responsible.

This commitment has been recognised: Soneva Fushi has received the President of Maldives’ Green Resort Award twice (in 2000 and 2006) and the Green Leaf Award in 2003.

The Soneva Gili and the Environment

The core purpose of Six Senses Resorts & Spas is ‘to create innovative and enriching experiences in a sustainable environment’. The theme behind Soneva Gili is ‘Intelligent Luxury’, with the resort displaying a high level of care and attention to the environment whilst providing all the modern day luxuries you would expect at the most exclusive resorts.

The resort has certainly left no stone unturned in their pursuit to provide an uncompromised level of service and standards afforded to guests. However they seem conscious that the fragile environment that they live in is one of their main attractions. Thus the resort has tried to minimize the impact made by development and have deliberately left some stones as they are. The choice of building materials and interiors was dictated by a desire towards sustainable development; hence the absence of rainforest teak, coral, or turtle shell. Materials such as pine, telegraph poles, palm wood, bamboo and plantation teaks are used instead. Interior items such as water hyacinth (the reeds that clog rivers), and papier-mâché (old newspapers covered by rice paper) demonstrate a good use of waste products.

As a hotel operation the management also understand that growth and prime existence should make a difference in the local community. Each year the resort carefully invests 0.5% of annual revenue in projects that produce socio-economic returns to the communities and create differences in the livelihoods of the local people.
