Rock kingdom: Sri Lanka’s rock monuments are a bedrock…

Gal Vihara, Polonnaruwa, SriLanka

Few places on earth match Sri Lanka for the pervasive sense of an ancient culture. The island’s rock monuments are central testaments to this culture and crucial to feeling its power, and they should be the bedrock of every visitor’s cultural itinerary.

Sri Lanka has a glorious array of historical monuments carved out of living rock or situated within rock environments. Sir Lanka possesses a very old civilization, and an equally old faith. More than two millennia ago, at the same time as classical Greece and China’s Zhou dynasty, the Sinhalese people established a capital city at Anuradhapura.

Shortly after, in 247 BC, the king converted to Buddhism and this isle of astonishing beauty became a stronghold of the faith, remaining so until this very day.

Down through the ages, throughout the island, the Buddhists of Sri Lanka have created monuments, imbuing the landscape with depth and resonance. Some of their works are amongst the finest art in the world. Almost without exception, these finest works are carved out of the very land itself, sculpted from the living rock.

When you travel the island, specially the north central region where the early kingdoms largely established themselves, it is not hard to see how this could have happened. The land is mostly flat, a vast plain, but out of this canvas there arise single rocky outcrops that catch the eye, lone and mysterious. You want to investigate them, and in ages past the Sinhalese must have felt similarly drawn, and not just to look, but to create wonderful shrines and temples.

The island is dotted with monuments of spiritual and temporal power. They are found in the original city of Anuradhapura, in the centre of the island, and in the far south at Buduruvagala, in the medieval capital of Polonnaruwa in the centre and at Aluvihara on the edge of the highlands.

Some are living institutions, rock and cave temples that have been nurtured continuously for millennia by Buddhist monks. Others, the fortresses and ancient cities, are abandoned places that have been restored through modern conservation.

Rock is integral to the history, religion and art of Sri Lanka. And there is one thing that makes it even more attractive and evocative to the modern visitor. Almost all the rock monuments stand far from modern urbanization, in a splendid isolation that enhances their historical power. Unlike, say, Rome’s Colosseum or the Tower of London, they are not circled by motor traffic and battered with noise, but stand in silent glory within natural landscapes that are actually less populated than they were in ancient times.

A vertiginous stairway climb takes visitors to a rock-top shrine with great views. Nature and history combine to create the powerful aura at Dambulla, in the north central plain, where a great Buddhist site of painted chambers cowers under a massive granite rock face. Sporting colourful frescoes of the Buddha’s life and 150 Buddha images, five separate cave chambers run for about 200 metres under the great rock face which curves grandly upward. An access terrace in front of the temple, which is about 150 metres above the surrounding land, commands splendid views across the plain.

Gal Vihara, Polonnaruwa, SriLanka - 2

At Sigiriya in the fifth century, the crazed king Kasyapa built a palace fortress on a stark sandstone mesa that is just 200 metres above the north central plain, lone and imperious – the Lion Rock. The stairway to the top went through the mouth of a huge brick-built lion’s head. Today visitors still climb between two huge lion’s paws, carved out of the rock, but the great leonine head has fallen to the ravages of time.

Sigiriya had a vast complex of buildings on its flat summit, but now only foundations remain, and the vestiges of huge rock-cut water basins. On the wind-swept top, impregnability is newly defined, and wonder at human ingenuity is refreshed. What a conception! What a construction!

If Sigiriya is the most amazing work of man in Sri Lanka, there is no doubt which is the finest work of art. At Polonnaruwa, the ancient capital city of the eleventh to thirteenth centuries, enormous yet exquisite Buddha images were sculpted in granite to form Gal Vihara.

Emerging from low cliff face, a group of three figures, one sitting, one standing and one reclining, bear witness to the masterful artistry of this medieval kingdom.

The Gal Vihara is undoubtedly the high point of Sri Lanka rock art, but it was not the end of the remarkable Sinhalese creativity in using and shaping the natural landscape.

The cave temples of Dimbulagala and Ritigala, Tantirimale rock temple, the list goes on – and even goes beyond man’s hand, if you so believe, in the magical ‘footprint’ rock on top of 2,224 metre high Adam’s Peak.

Sri Lanka is as Green as it Gets

Sri Lanka is as Green as it Gets

The Mother of All Ficus - Sri Lanka
The Mother of All Ficus - Sri Lanka

Our driver pulls the car to the side of the road to let a convoy pass. “A minister,” he says, “best to keep our distance.”

This is Sri Lanka. A twenty year old civil war has taught its citizens to stay clear of government officials who might be targets of suicide bombs, and has scared travelers away. A real pity as tourists have never been targets.

Not much has changed since I last visited some fourteen year ago: the “lush green dream” I described in a story then or the little towns where a Christian Church, a Mosque and Tamil and Buddhist temples might share a city block. Nor the police barricades along the road except that they now have become so ubiquitous that they carry advertising.

[Note – this article was written in 2008, before the war ended in May 2009]

Traveling safely in Sri Lanka, or any other place, is mostly a matter of avoiding the wrong place at the wrong time:  staying away from the northern regions and avoiding public events attended by politicians. Most Sri Lankans and visitors get along just fine, thank you.

I have a fondness for green places, especially the redwood forests of Northern California, where I live. What is different about Sri Lanka is its diversity of green. Driving out of Colombo, the nation’s capitol, you slip into a world which some might consider an hallucination, from emerald apparitions of lush wetlands and jungles where wild elephants roam, to above-the-clouds tea plantations and fusty old golf clubs where the Brits once took tea…and tee.

“Green,” in Sri Lanka, is now coloring political culture as well as the scenery. The county is aiming to become carbon neutral by 2018. Probably not as difficult as in nations without Sri Lanka’s lung-like ecosystem, a natural respirator with ample natural foliage to suck up carbon and puff out oxygen. We all know that tourism can do great damage to environments: jetliners and diesel buses pollute, hotel developments create waste. Led by Sri Lanka’s tourism community, Sri Lanka’s Tourism Earth Lung Initiative aims to aid that giant lung by creating best practice models for transportation, hotels, resorts and tourist attractions while planting even more trees. Yes, it is about saving the planet, but it is also about preserving an industry that depends upon natural attractions to survive. Anything that makes a traveler feel good about visiting has to help.

Would I go back to Sri Lanka today given recent incidents? I would, most definitely, as Sri Lanka is one of the most physically-beautiful and culturally-interesting places I have ever visited…and I haven’t seen it all yet. Tourists have not been targets. Frankly, I have always felt safer in almost all places in Asia than I do in almost all large cities in the gun-slingin’ US of A.

Gadaladeniya Temple in Kandy, Sri Lanka

Gadaladeniya Temple in Kandy, Sri Lanka

Kandy boasts of many religious places of which the most prominent is the Dalada Maligawa [Temple of the tooth] followed by Ambekke, Lankathilaka, Gannoruwa and Gadaladeniya. Gadaladeniya Temple is one of the well-known destinations in Kandy which was established on the rock at Diggala, 15km from Kandy town. The beautiful Temple has an old monastery, which you can visit during a tour to Kandy.

The Temple at Gadaladeniya was built in 1344 by King Buwanekabahu IV, according to an inscription written inside the temple. It was designed by many architects, but one of the main architects was Ganesvarachari, who was a South Indian. As a result, the Gadaladeniya Temple has a distinct South Indian flavour to the architecture.

The chief shrine room at the Temple has a statue of the Buddha in Vajrasana [Kneeling posture] under a Makara Thorana [Dragon adornment] and four Buddha images in a standing position. On both of its faces, the Makara Thorana is adorned with images of gods like Brahma, Santhusuta, Suyama, Natha and Maithree and two followers.

The chamber which is located inside the”Sikhara” [dome] consists of a Buddha figure. But the image has been ruined by the Portuguese. Just beside the shrine room is a Devale [Hindu shrine] which is devoted to Lord Vishnu. The Mahavansa believed that the grand history of Sri Lanka includes “Upulvan Deiyo”. Therefore it is said Lord Vishnu was appointed to save Sri Lanka and Buddhism within it because the Buddha passed away at that time. As a result Sri Lankans give a special veneration to Lord Vishnu.

There is a Stupa which is constructed on a rock beside the Vishnu Devale. Sri Lankans believe that the Stupa has been built by King Parakramabahu. It has a roof which is constructed above it standing on four pillars.

On the little shrine rooms surrounding the central stupa, there are four smaller stupas. This particular formation is known as the “Vijayothpaya or Vijayantha Prasada”. It has got its name after the mythical palace of Lord Indra. Presently Gadaladeniya Temple is identified as “Gadaladeniya”. But according to an inscription this temple is known as “Dharma Kirthi Viharaya”. It is the name of the monk who founded this temple.

Festive air in Kataragama

Festive air in Kataragama

Kiri Vehera at Kataragama at night
Kiri Vehera at Kataragama at night

The air smells of kerosene and jasmine flower. Young men crack whips as thick as cobras, while others skilfully twirl fire, leaving circular trails of light. There is rhythmic drumming and tribal dancing.

It’s what I imagine Burning Man Festival to be, except drugs and drinking are replaced by devotion to deities.

This is Kataragama Festival, a two week-long holy event that sees the arrival of some 100,000 Hindu, Buddhist and Muslim pilgrims. Devotees, many of whom have travelled for weeks to get to this auspicious city, have come to worship and perform acts of penance and self-mortification.

Some swing from hooks piercing their bodies while others walk on fire to show their devotion to God.

The festival entrance has a carnival-type atmosphere, with vendors selling stuffed animals, fruit offerings, plastic trinkets and sweets.

Walking through the fairgrounds, I’m happy to see that security is heightened with checkpoints and police searching baggage – as the war between the separatist Tigers and the Sri Lankan government continues, you can’t be too careful.

Past the checkpoints, people have gathered, eagerly watching the procession of elephants down a path illuminated by beads of light. Dressed in a red rhinestone cloak, one elephant looks like a Mexican luchador wrestler.

This holy shrine and popular pilgrim centre is humanity at its finest. On the fringes of the main action, I see the bodies of passed out pilgrims strewn all over the ground. Some are cooking their dinner by small smouldering fire (a scene that’s becoming increasingly more common with the rise in gas prices) while others are gently rocking their babies to sleep.

Trying to find a spot to watch the parade, I make my way through the maze. Every step is carefully calculated and I’m wary of stepping on little hands and feet. Though many have been waiting for hours for their spots, all are welcoming as I cozy my way up to the front.

Seated on the sandy floor, a woman offers me a piece of her tarp to sit on. Here, people are very generous to foreigners. I’m offered oranges, water and lots of smiles.

I can feel all eyes on me. Here, I’m partly a movie star and partly a sideshow freak. Mothers holding infants point at me, raising their voices and eyebrows as if to say, “Look at that. Isn’t that girl amusing?”

While some might feel self-conscious, I sort of like being “the other.” I get off on being the outsider. In a crowd of thousands, I feel strangely satisfied that there are only a handful of foreigners.
