Excursions

Explore the surroundings at the Royal Palms Beach Hotel and you would discover a wealth of beauty and information.

  • The ancient Rock Temple with its beautiful frescoes, the sprawling old Richmond Castle and the famed Kalutara Bodhiya Temple, one of the most photographed temples in Sri Lanka, located as it is between the river and the sea – are awe-inspiring examples of this island’s ancient past.
  • Tea factories which dot this area offer an instant insight into one of the island’s most famous industries – the art of growing and manufacturing tea.
  • The Kalutara Fishing Harbour is a typical coastal fishing village. The fishing community lives and breathes the ocean, their livelihood coming from the crystal clear blue waters with their homes built on the palm fringed beaches.
  • Learn the true art of conservation and preservation of life through a visit to a Turtle Hatchery. Here, turtle eggs are hatched, baby turtles nurtured and sent back to their natural habitat – the big, wide blue ocean waiting to welcome them home.
  • You could visit a Wood Carving Centre and watch the dexterity of the carvers as they turn out beautiful works of art from pieces of wood, carrying on a traditional craft handed down from one generation to the next.
  • When you spot the Toddy tappers walk a tightrope strung between palm trees high above ground, take time to linger awhile until they shimmy down the trunk of the tree back to ground level. They are almost certain to be carrying a clay pot filled to the brim with sweet coconut toddy – consumed by villagers who have implicit faith in its health-giving properties. Kept to foment, this same coconut toddy can become a potent brew!
  • Optional excursions include visits to the famed “Ketchimala Mosque” located on a promontory jutting out into the ocean, coral gardens, moonstone mines and the famed “Botanical Gardens” created by Bevis Bawa, Sri Lanka’s renowned horticulturist and landscape artist.

Sri Lanka – Tourism museum for Sigiriya

Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) has signed a Record of Discussion (R/D) with the concerned authorities of the Central Cultural Fund (CCF) of the Ministry of Cultural Affairs and National Heritage (MCANH) and Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) of the Ministry of Tourism (MoT) to initiate a 2.5 year technical cooperation project on “Project for Development of Culture-Oriented Tourism in Sigiriya” (Project COTS).

The project COTS is initiated in line with the request of the Government of Sri Lanka which was intended at developing the tourism sector that was heavily setback by the December 2004 Tsunami and the ongoing civil war status of the country. The Government of Japan responded to this request through extending assistance to several projects in the vicinity of a new museum construction at Sigiriya, installation of display equipment in the museum, and infrastructure and human resource development with respect to tourism.

The “Project to construct a New Sigiriya museum” is being implemented under the counterpart fund scheme of the Government of Sri Lanka, a scheme which delivers developmental assistance through turning foreign aid into reserves of domestic currency where recipient Governments can use these finances to improve its necessary infrastructure facilities. The museum is expected to be opened to the public by middle of year 2009.

Subsequently to the aforementioned, Government of Japan signed an exchange of notes to further enhance the tourism segment under its cultural grant aid scheme through implementing a “Project for supply of equipment for interpretative display and presentation of the cultural heritage of Sigiriya” for installation of display equipment at the New Sigiriya museum.

Financial assistance worth of 2604 million Japanese yen is approved to be provided through the Japan Bank for International Cooperation (JBIC) to improve the infrastructure facilities, access roads and human resources in five identified tourism regions in the country including Sigiriya.

In order to further amplify the outcomes of the aforementioned 03 projects, project COTS aims to extend assistance through hardware and software cooperation and establish the operational and management functions of the new museum, while promoting culture oriented tourism in Sigiriya.

SLTPB of the MoT and CCF of the MCANH will be the joint counterpart stakeholder agencies of the project CoT.

SriLankan Airlines takes measures to cut fuel usage

SriLankan Airlines takes measures to cut fuel usage

Though world fuel prices are easing, SriLankan Airlines is projecting a fuel bill of US$ 500 million for the current year at present prices, which accounts for approximately 50% of its overall costs, the airline said this week.

The price of a barrel of crude oil has surged 85% during the last 12 months and reached a high of $143 in July this year from last year’s $75 and now is seen falling. “Fuel is our biggest cost factor by far. While we are significantly reducing costs throughout the airline, we know that even a small saving in the amount of fuel consumed on every flight will result in savings in hundreds of millions of rupees,” said S.A. Chandrasekera, Chief Financial Officer, in a press release issued by the airline.

The airline says it is focusing on sharply reducing its fuel usage to counter the challenge posed by high global oil prices. A series of fuel-saving measures has already been implemented, while more will be put in place within weeks.

“The global airline industry is undergoing its biggest ever crisis due to the steep increases in the price of aviation fuel. Larger airlines are suffering losses and many smaller ones are going out of business. SriLankan is taking this challenge head on,” Mr Chandrasekera said.

SriLankan recently invited a team of experts in fuel efficiency from the International Air Transport Association (IATA), who conducted an in-depth study and recommended detailed measures. The airline has appointed a special committee to implement the proposals and enhance them wherever possible.
“We are not satisfied with simply following IATA’S recommendations. We have already added a large number of our own initiatives, and are tailoring the IATA suggestions to suit the requirements of our airline,” said Captain Anushad Liyanagoda, who was recently appointed to the newly created post of Manager Aviation Fuel.

The airline has already come up with several imaginative methods to reduce fuel consumption, and is quantifying the amount of savings from every one of them. One of these is “RNAV Approaches”, where aircraft make continuous descent approaches into Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA). Discussions have been held with the Civil Aviation Authority and air traffic controllers to implement this programme, which would save 100-200 kilogrammes of fuel on every landing.

Another measure already implemented is to use diesel-powered Ground Power Units to supply power to internal systems and air-conditioning on all aircraft while they are parked at BIA, instead of using Auxiliary Power Units of the aircraft themselves, which use aviation fuel. This move is saving 130 – 200 kg of aviation fuel per hour.

Other initiatives include “Flap 3” landings; single engine taxi between terminals and runways; minimised use of reverse thrust during landings; flying shorter routes whenever possible; and re-evaluation of the airline’s choice of alternate airports. There is also a new Re-despatch Procedure, which is saving approx 1,200 kg of fuel on every flight from Europe to Colombo; and all flights are being closely monitored to obtain maximum usage of tail winds.

Sea Anglers Club to go fishing in grand style this year

Sea Anglers Club to go fishing in grand style…

The Ceylon Sea Anglers Club will hold its third annual Madu Ganga Estuary Fishing Competition on October 4. Established in 1934 and located at Barberyn Island at its inception, the Sea Anglers Club was subsequently moved to Clappenberg Bay after the 2nd World War. This club holds the distinction of being one of the few resident angling clubs in the world, and has the charm and character to lure anglers from all over the world.

Situated in one of the most picturesque locations in our resplendent isle, it is home to an abundance of game fish species. In its more recent history however the sport of angling in Trincomalee has been littered with obstacles due the prevailing conflict.

In 2006 the Committee decided to organize events in the south west coast and inland waterways to enhance the sport and also to raise much needed funds for the upkeep of the Club. In October 2006, the Club conducted its inaugural Madu Ganga Estuary Fishing Competition. Madu Ganga was chosen so that anglers who frequent inshore lakes, such as Bolgoda, would get an opportunity to explore the unspoiled surroundings of other estuaries like Madu Ganga which boasts a healthy stock of Barramundi and other fresh water species. The event was successfully held last year as well.

The year’s event is shaping up to be a bigger success. The Troll will be held on October 4 and will be a wonderful day out for anglers and their families. Exciting prizes await this year’s winners including Penn Reels, Cabelas inshore rods, Plano tackle boxes, Berkley fishing accessories etc.

Other prizes include a weekend for two sponsored by Keells Hotel Management Services, a precision SWATCH wristwatch sponsored by B.P. De Silva’s and a mobile phone sponsored by Dialog Telekom.

Entries close on September 30. For more details, email: sea.anglers@gmail.com or call Harry on 0777762276 or Harin on 0777390396, or check their website www.ceylonseaanglers.com

The CSAC, together with clubs such as Sports Fishing Club of Sri Lanka, have made it their mission to promote the sport of angling in Sri Lanka. Conducting competitions using IGFA (International Game Fishing Association) guidelines, the CSAC regulates sustainable fishing, ensuring that competitors release all fish that are below the sanctioned size according to the rules of the competition.
