 Kandy House Sri Lanka

The Kandy House is a carefully-renovated old colonial ‘Walauwa’ (colonial mansion) in the spice-growing hills that surround Kandy. Its completion heralded what the hill-country-capital has been waiting for so long: a brilliant small boutique hotel capable of offering stylish and private accommodation and attentive personal service in a beautiful natural setting.

The inspired refurbishment of the ‘Walauwa’, with its white interiors, polished hardwood floorboards, jackwood staircase, Dutch-style antique furniture and careful injections of colour, has been a triumph. Channa Daswatta, one of renowned Sri Lankan architect Geoffery Bawa’s protégés and Sri Lanka’s leading modern day architect, provided the creative inspiration. The bedrooms are unquestionably the finest in Kandy. The freshwater infinity pool in the garden provides an irresistible opportunity to unwind and relax under the shade of tropical trees. The wide verandas provide the perfect place to doze-off with your favourite novel.

The Kandy House was once the seat of the king’s Chief Minister, Ratwatte Adigar, who betrayed his king to the British in the early 19th Century as Ceylon fell into colonial hands in 1815. Old Ratwatte family photos and antique furniture still remain in the house.

The Kandy House was added to the Conde Nast Traveller’s Hot List in 2006.

Note: Children under 12 are not welcome as the House is full of priceless antiques.

ACCOMMODATION

Kandy House has nine luxurious bedrooms that take their names from varieties of native endemic butterflies. They all have a colonial character updated with contemporary silks and cottons. All rooms have four-poster beds with mosquito nets, ceiling fans and floor to ceiling shuttered windows overlooking the gardens. They split into three categories: three Deluxe Rooms, three Super Deluxe and three Ultra Deluxe.

Deluxe Rooms:

Monkey Puzzle: This is a small twin-bedded garden room, the smallest in the house, situated on the lower level of the courtyard. The bedroom has low ceilings and the bathroom has shower and single basin. As it adjoins the Garden Suite, the two rooms can combine to offer excellent family accommodation.

Sunbeam and Lime Butterfly: Here are two double gallery rooms. The Sunbeam Room has an appealing bathroom with double washbasins, a vintage cast-iron bath tub and shower. The bedroom has ceiling fans and four-poster bed with mosquito net; overlooks the swimming pool and the courtyard. The Lime Butterfly Room is very comfortable and also has a lovely bathroom, double washbasins, an old cast iron bathtub and shower. Ceiling fan and 4 poster bed with mosquito nets.

Super Deluxe Rooms:

Indian Red Admiral and Cornelian: These two gallery rooms are both on the upper floor and overlook a large courtyard. These double-bedded rooms open onto a private verandah complete with chaise lounge where you can settle back and gaze upon the jungle views. An extra bed can be added to the Indian Red Admiral, for a surcharge, to create a triple room.

The Pioneer: Is a beautiful garden room with its own verandah. The bathroom has a shower, but no bath. A double swing-hammock is installed on the verandah for your relaxation. An extra bed can be added to The Pioneer, for a surcharge, to create a triple room.

Ultra Deluxe rooms:

Black Rajah Garden Suite: This is an Ultra Deluxe Room and the only suite in the house. It has arched doorways opening out from the large living area onto lovingly tendered gardens below. The bedroom has a low king-size bed and a romantic bathroom with tiled, octagonal two-person bath and massage area. A new double swing hammock is installed in the garden by this suite.

Peacock Royal and Red Spot Duke: These two verandah rooms are the largest and are also classified as Ultra Deluxe. They open out onto a wide wrap-around verandah, dotted with cane chaises lounge chairs and colonial Dutch antiques. All the bedrooms have four-poster beds with fitted mosquito nets. The bedrooms are not air-conditioned, but the cooler hill-country air and ceiling fans make A/C’s unnecessary. Stylish concrete-washed ensuite bathrooms have private bathtubs and showers, with twin washbasins.

CUISINE

Guests dine in style in the elegant dining room or on the less formal veranda overlooking the garden and the Kandyan countryside. There is a set daily menu – limited to a starter, choice of two main courses (perhaps tamarind prawns or Thai green curry) and a dessert (such as sticky lime pie). Any lack of choice is made up for in the quality and freshness of the ingredients (indeed this is the very reason for the limited number of options), and special meals can of course be asked for. It’s best to have a chat with the kitchen staff [chef] at the start of each day.

Breakfast is a tasty selection of fruit or eggs and toast. You can have a full English breakfast with a selection of tropical fruit and juices, or you can have a ‘fusion’ of both eastern and western.

Picnics can be arranged for lunchtime if you are out and about; alternatively there is a small snack menu (such as sandwiches and spring rolls) that always includes a special salad of the day.

EXCURSIONS

Jetwing’s ‘Vil Uyana’ Gets PAT(A) on the back

Jetwing’s ‘Vil Uyana’ Gets PAT(A) on the back

In 2002, a couple of gentlemen on a visit to the Barnes Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust in UK were immensely impressed by what they saw there. “Why not replicate something similar in Sri Lanka?” they thought. In due course, they did! They are Hiran Cooray, Deputy Chairman, Jetwing Hotels Ltd, and Gehan de Silva Wijeyratne, CEO, Jetwing Eco Holidays. Their replica was created within view of the renowned Sigiriya rock fortress and is Jetwing’s newest property – Vil Uyana.

Vil Uyana - Sigiriya, Sri Lanka - Jetwing Hotels

But the transformation of their dream into reality was not quite smooth sailing. “We wanted to turn barren land into wetland, but the authorities here did not understand,” recounts Cooray. “Consequently, we had to struggle for 23 months to get approval.”

The creation of the 9½ acre lake alone cost Jetwing a whopping Rs 40 million. But it’s payback time now. The premium price-tag of US$ 110 per night for bed and breakfast does not seem to be a deterrent. Cooray says, “Occupancy is pushing 40% and the majority of our guests are locals… We can’t grumble at the way things are shaping up.”

Vil Uyana’s moment of glory, however, came recently, when the Pacific Asia Travel Association (PATA) announced its 24 Gold Award winners. In addition to these, four Best-of-Show Grand Awards were announced. Jetwing’s Youth Development Project at Vil Uyana bagged the Grand Award in the Education and Training category for the ‘We Dreamed a Dream’ project. The project was originally planned to bridge the skills gap and equip local youngsters for employment. This was done by providing training in hospitality and English – free – to school-leavers from disadvantaged farming families in the Sigiriya area.

Jetwing went to temples and asked monks to find them youth aged 18 years and above. Teaching of English to the selected youth commenced in January 2006, at the temple premises itself. A ‘personality profile test’ facilitated determining the youngsters’ aptitudes for different areas of hotel operations.

Accordingly, individuals were trained in Front Office, Housekeeping, Food & Beverage or Kitchen Operations.

The passing out ceremony took place in June 2006 and successful candidates were absorbed into the staff cadre.

In addition, Sri Lanka has won three Gold Awards. SriLankan Airlines bagged one for its ‘Home Away from Home’ marketing campaign for carriers. Chaaya Hotels & Resorts won two: (a) in the Environment category, for its ecotourism project, Chaaya Village Habarana and (b) in the Marketing Media category, for its CD-ROM.

All award recipients will be honoured at a special luncheon at the PATA Travel Mart 2007 to be held in Bali, Indonesia , on September 28, 2007.

its accomplishments – in ecotourism and engagement of local communities – Jetwing has recently signed a contract to build two rainforest lodges in Cambodia.

 Vil Uyana Sigiriya Sri Lanka

Vil Uyana is in view of the Sigiriya rock fortress, on the flatlands that stretch to the west. The resort integrates into an ancient plan – a plan to irrigate, in the tradition of the Sinhala kings. The introduction of a wetland on reclaimed agricultural lands within the dry zone provides a unique backdrop for this exciting new property, inspired by local and rural traditions.

A private nature reserve provides a haven for wildlife in this peaceful and tranquil setting. The hotel is possibly the first in the world to construct a wetland system with lakes and reed beds to form a private nature reserve. This has allowed for the first time in Sri Lanka rooms built over water. Centred around small lakes and ponds are parklands and woods, designed for leisure; an extension of the ancient practice of planning gardens for pleasure.

A challenge has been overcome for the conversion of dry zone chena lands formed by slash & burn agriculture, to a seasonal wetland (land that is inundated by water for part of the year). The colonization of the new habitats by local fauna and flora has been accelerated by the planting of reed beds and groves of trees.

5 acres of land was used to re-grow paddy using traditional methods of farming and harvesting, providing a new and exciting feature. Rooms have been placed within the paddy fields, thereby giving the guest a unique opportunity of participating in both the farming and harvesting if they wished; yet another first in Sri Lanka! The regeneration of the forested groves creates a feeling of ultimate privacy and seclusion in the Forest Lodges, the largest of the Chalets.

The tastefully designed rooms boast space as its hallmark of luxury. Dine in the privacy of your room or ‘under the stars’ or simply relax and pamper yourself at the Island Spa with a range of treatments to choose from.

THINGS TO DO

Walk With Kings: A brave king’s hideaway during times of war, says one legend & sanctuary to the rag-robe-wearers, a break-away group of monks in ancient times, says another & a fragment of soil from the Himalayas brought by the ape-god Hanuman, says a third.

A morning hike to a mountain steeped in myth and mystery; a site of centuries old ruins; a veritable stone monastery that lies in Ritigala’s dense jungle. In the afternoon guests will experience the royal mode of transportation – on elephant back! Then, an exploration of the forest, cross a river and survey the surrounding villages, as the kings did, on a one-and-a-half hour elephant ride. Finally, a delicious five-course meal will be served up by the poolside. This includes a taste of the local delicacy-‘olu bath’ (water lily rice). Package includes: Transport to Ritigala in an A/C van Bottled water Entrance fees Services of a naturalist Elephant back safari Dinner and wine.

Adrenalin and Adventure: Visitors can tramp through the woods, exploring centuries-old caves and cavernous boulders en route to “Kaludiya Pokuna” (Black water pool) on an early morning adventure. After a picnic breakfast, visitors will be led through the heart-pounding scale of a sheer rock surface to be rewarded by spectacular views of Habarana, Sigiriya and Ritigala.

After they descend, the next stop will be “Namal Uyana” for an hour-long trek through the lush forest reserve in the otherwise arid landscape of Dambulla, to its famed rose quartz deposit.

In the afternoon, a cycle trip along the scenic and yet treacherous route encircling five lakes.

A Habarana sunset can be experienced on the return journey. Each and every one will be greeted at the hotel by a free happy-hour of Jungle Cocktails and Mocktails by the pool-side, with the village snake charmer as the host. While those adventurous enough may seek to share in his passion for handling the python, every one is invited to try the signature arrack cocktail in a coconut shell or make their own cocktails with the hotel’s selection of local spirits and tropical fruit juices.

Package includes: Transport to Kaludiya Pokuna and Namal Uyana in an A/C van – Entrance fees for Namal Uyana, picnic breakfast and bottled water and services of a naturalist. Bike hire and free cocktails during happy hour.

The Fish-er-Way: After a leisurely afternoon, visitors can join the village fishermen at the bank of the lake. With the guidance of the ‘experts’, they may use either the Oruwa (narrow wooden outrigger boat) or wade through the water, to cast the nets. In silence and in complete harmony with the surrounding tranquillity, you will be shown how to cast the nets the traditional way, moving slowly and gracefully amidst myriad water lilies, lotus, and bird species.

On their return, all who participated will be treated to a sumptuous river and seafood dinner by the poolside. The next day, all those up for the challenge can join the fishermen at sunrise to paddle or wade across the lake, skilfully removing the nets and retrieving the catch! The catch is generally shared with friends, as is the local custom. Package includes: Hire of oruwa on both days Services of a naturalist Dinner

Native Cues: A morning bullock cart ride will take visitors through the village of Hiriwadunna, to a banana plantation where ripe bananas can be tasted and savoured fresh. Cross a scenic reservoir by oruwa (traditional boat), its long, narrow shape gliding effortlessly on the water, to visit a chena cultivation, where in the shade of a tree house of mud and thatched palm leaves, the village of Hiriwaduna can be surveyed. On the return journey guests can drop by the house of a native and enjoy aromatic ginger tea and Jaggery. The next stop will be a visit to an authentic local cottage industry to witness the skilful carving of caricatures from old tree roots. Everyone will get a chance to carve his or her own token. Then, a stop at a local kamatha (Paddy field) for lunch, to be treated to delicious local cuisine served on lotus leaves by a village family. Back at the hotel everyone will be treated to a free Ayurvedic treatment of his or her choice at the hotel spa in the afternoon or evening. With the world heritage site “Sinharaja Rainforest Reserve”, one of the countries main birdwatching locations just on their doorstep, Boulder Garden potentially promises rare birds and upto 242 species of indigenous butterflies (14 endemic).

Rain Forest Reserve

Sinharaja is one of the most beautiful virgin tropical rain forests remaining on the planet. The flora and fauna is an impressive 50% endemic. Due to its high biodiversity and ecological importance, it has been declared a National Heritage Wilderness Area, a World Protected Biosphere and also a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. The vegetation of Sinharaja may be described either as a tropical lowland rain forest or tropical wet evergreen forest. Some striking characteristics of the forest are the loftiness of the dominant trees, the straightness of their bole, the abundance of regeneration and the diversity of species. Average height of the trees varies between 35m -40m. Some individuals rise even upto 50m. The vegetation of Sinharaja is that of humid wet evergreen forest type with a high degree of endemism. In fact some families such as Dipterocarpaceae show an endemism more than 90%. The untapped genetic potential of Sinharaja flora is enormous.

Sinharaja Butterfly Sinharaja Lizard Sinharaja Moth

Out of the 211 woody trees and lianas so far identified within the reserve 139 (66%) are endemic. Similarly, high levels of endemism are perhaps true for the lower plants like ferns, epiphyts as well.out of 25 general endemic to Sri Lanka 13 are represent in Sinharaja. The Total vegetation density, including trees, shrubs, herbs and seedlings has been estimated to be around 240,000 individuals per hectare, of which 95% comprise individuals of the ground layer bellow 1m in height. The density of trees, lianas above 30 cm girth at breast height, ranges between 600 – 700 individuals per hectare while the number of merchantable individuals of trees of girth grater than 150cm ranges between 45-55 individuals per hectare.

Studies on the fauna of Sinharaja have revealed that there is a high degree of endemism among the butterflies, fish, amphibians, reptiles, birds and mammals are greater than 50%. There have been reports of sightings of a few animals in the eastern Secter. The most common deer species is the Sambhur The Monk deer and Barking deer are also found within the reserve. Leopards are very seldom sighted, but their frequent presence has been confirmed by tracks and other signs. Badger Mongoose and the Golden Palm Civet have been occasionally sighted. The most commonly seen primate is the Purple – faced Leaf Monkey. Although the elephants said to be common in the past, there have not been reports of sightings during the last 15 years.

Boulder Garden Hotel Resort Kalawana Sri Lanka - viewOut of the Birds recorded in the western sector of the reserve, 72% were resident non-endemic and 13% migrants. One of the most interesting and colorful spectacles to be found in the in the Sinharaja is the presence of mixed species of foraging bird flocks, a phenomenon commonly found in rain forests total of 100 such flocks were systematically observed, and studies have revealed that some flocks contained 48 species including 12 endemic species. The rare endemic birds to be seen in Sinharaja are the Red-faced Malkoha, the Sri Lanka Blue Magpie, the Ashy-headed Barbbler, and the White – headed Starling and the Green – billed Coucal the rarest of Sri Lankan birds. The Agamids are the best represented group of reptiles, the most common being the Green Garden Lizard. Of Special significance are the sightings of Calotes Liolepis an arboreal species, the rearest of all agamids found in the island. The only Tortoise recorded in the reserve is the Hard – shelled Terrapin, while of the species of skinks, the spotted skink can be seen often. Among the snakes The Green Pit Viper and Hump-nosed Viper are commonly found in this forest and are endemic to Sri Lanka.

The amphibians are fairly well represented in the reserve and nine endemic species have been identified. The endemic Torrent toad and the common house toad. In most streams and marshes, the Wrinkled frog and The Sri Lankan Reed frog is also found in Sinharaja. Ramanella palmata a rare endemic species is the only microhylid recorded so far while the yellow-banded Caecilian is the only apodan recorded. It is desirable that you, who visit the forest, be sensitive to the need to conserve forests such as Sinharaja.Contray to the chaos and congestion prevailing in urban areas, it is in forests that the quality of life is best expressed. In addition man finds peace and tranquillity in forest.

Allow yourself sufficient time to roam about within nature’s green cathedral and enjoy its beauty and majesty whether you are a photographer, artist, scientist or a nature lover. “Please leave it as you find it” and you have our humble request.

Earth Lung – Carbon Clean Sri Lanka

Carbon Clean Sri LankaIntroduction

Ayubowan ….. the greeting of my Island country Sri Lanka, I greeted you with today, is also a unique ecological statement. Its meaning from its Sanskrit origin, is ‘May all living beings on Earth, have Long Life”. Not just you or I. From time immemorial, our people have lived in harmony with nature. Their lives were woven together with their natural, social and cultural environment. Their very ethos and their ways had, in-built systems to care for and nurture the very resources that supported their life-styles.

Ours was a hydro-civilisation. The typical village unit consisted of the irrigation tank, river or other water body, the forest around, the fields the people cultivated and their place of worship. They, for over two thousand six hundred years of documented history lived in harmony with nature, maintaining a state of equilibrium. They were one with nature and their environment.

Much of that has changed today. While in comparison to many other nations, we have been able to retain the charm of much of our natural environment and make a strong nature, culture, adventure based tourism offer to our visitors, our challenge is to keep all of that, that way. We are here today and have been at several other forums to discuss the effects of green house gas emissions, and its impacts on climate change, because we all see a breaking down of that equilibrium.

However, all is not lost yet. I know that, we leaders of the travel and tourism industry believe that, there is hope for us. We believe that humankind and in particular our industry, can take meaningful steps and even lead movements within our countries and in our regions and make a contribution globally. We know that we can work together to ensure that we regain a state of equilibrium that is sustainable. We know that we can have tourism play a significant role in mitigating the impacts of global warming and climate change. And that resolve is what I believe has brought us together today, at this forum.

Top Asian Hot-Spot for Bio-Diversity

Sri Lanka is one of Asia’s hotspots of bio-diversity and endemism according to a UN FAO study released this year. Another recent study made of 141 countries, by the World Economic Forum and researchers from Yale and Columbia Universities, on the most green and liveable places on planet Earth, also ranks Sri Lanka high on the list. We are placed 36th in energy efficiency and environmental health categories and 37th in the green house gases mitigation category. The study findings in summary, is presented in this month’s issue of the Reader’s Digest Magazine.

While I do not want to bore you with data and statistics, I can not but help, present a few.

Sri Lanka is a small island and can not claim to be any where close to the voluminous carbon sinks of that of the Amazon or the Congo. Yet, Sri Lanka is home to a record number of some 3,368 species of vascular plants, 200 plus species of reptiles and amphibians, 419 bird species and 89 species of mammals, many of which are endemic. Of these, 26% of vascular plants, 49% of reptiles, 40% of all woody plants are endemic to Sri Lanka. This is not only significant in terms of global conservation importance. It is also of much economic value to our local communities.

Our extensive forests, the home of many valuable endemic tree species and non-timber forest products are of much economic significance. Recent studies document the importance of remaining forests to rural economies with non-timber products alone, generating between 16-26% of family incomes. Forests are clearly a key feature in our attempt at building a sustainable Sri Lanka, for ourselves and in the interest of mother earth. Our forests are also home, to some 3,000 Asian elephants, almost a fifth of the elephants on the Indian Subcontinent.

Sri Lanka has approximately 30% forest cover comprising some 2 million hectares. The best known is the virgin rain forest, ‘Sinharaja’, a UNESCO World Heritage site. These forests store approximately 21 tonnes per hectare for a total of 40 million tonnes of carbon.

Forests in the past have also been cleared for agriculture. In particular, to set- up tea plantations. These tea plantations themselves are known today, to be good stores of carbon.

Each year about 1,000 ha are reforested. In addition, about 2 million seedlings are distributed among local communities to enhance the sustenance of the tree cover in the country. Our Forest Department, working with support agencies and groups, have established many community forestry programs. In addition to natural forests, plantations of teak, eucalyptus, pinus and mahogany support the timber industry.

Given the rich bio-diversity and the various steps Sri Lanka takes in conserving it, we have also being rewarded with other significant accolades. Earlier this year, Sri Lanka’s Ministry of Environment and Natural Resources was awarded the Global Ozone Prize 2007 in recognition of the contribution made to the protection of the Ozone layer at a ceremony held in Montreal. Prof. Mohan Munesinghe, a Sri Lankan scientist is party to the Nobel Peace Prize this year in his capacity as the Vice Chairman of the UN Intergovernmental Committee on Climate Change (ICCC), which shares the prize with former US Vice President Al Gore.

We in tourism are beneficiaries of the rich bio-diversity, the green positioning, and the efforts made by many in ensuring that we conserve and protect our environmental, social and cultural resources. It is both an advantage and a huge responsibility that is placed on us. For tourism, must ensure that we are able to have these resources in-tact. We need to ensure that we support the creation of jobs, enhancing the livelihoods of our people and communities, uplifting their status in society, bringing reasonable returns on investments made by entrepreneurs and offering a quality tourism product and services to our visitors.

Making a Difference

The question then is “What can we on our own and as the collective conscience of the world do, to ensure that we make a real and solid difference?”. In tourism, little Sri Lanka has come up with a lead initiative, with a resolve to make the Island nation, a carbon neutral tourism destination.

“Towards a Carbon Clean Sri Lanka: A Tourism Earth Lung” is the thrust we have initiated. I am happy that the initiative championed by Sri Lanka Tourism presented at the UNWTO/UNEP/WMO/ WEF 2nd Conference on Climate Change and Tourism in Davos, was recognised and is supported by the UNWTO.

With the Tourism Earth Lung destination initiative, we seek to establish codes of practice for each of the industry sub-sectors. It also seeks to influence and even lead efforts at stopping de-forestation, ensuring re-forestation, encourage the use of alternative energy sources and mitigate pollution at their sources through local and regional efforts, creating an “Earth Lung Community”.

COMPARE AND BOOK HOTELS IN SRI LANKA – HERE!

True, it’s the little drops that make the ocean. But in this fast- forward world of ours today, little drops count little to mitigate the colossal mistakes made by us in perhaps, the last sixty years of human history. What we need today is strong assertive fast-forward action. We need action from tourism, that can dove-tail into the global movement on combating Global Warming…. touching all; focussing on the stark realities we face all around us. For this is not only about climate change…. but about our very future survival. It is about our survival as nations, economies, tourism destinations and as citizens of the world.

My call to you from Sri Lanka and ‘Sri Lanka Tourism’ is…. for us to join hands collectively, sharing our experiences, our efforts and our thrusts. We invite you all, to become part of the “Tourism Earth Lung Community” to care, share and make a strong impact on the on-ground action, that we all need to take, to mitigate the impacts of green house gas emissions, to ensure that we together, build a tourism, that is sustainable and will benefit all.
