Location: Cairns, Northern Beaches or Port Douglas, Australia

Seeking a white water rafting adventure? The Barron River, 20-minutes north of Cairns, offers spectacular scenery including the Barron Falls on this two-hour white water rafting tour from Cairns.

  • Rafting at Barron Gorge
  • All rafting equipment (except shoes – available on rent)
  • Experienced river guides
  • Hotel pickup and drop off

The Barron River Gorge is located just 20 minutes drive north of Cairns and lies along a traditional pathway used by the original indigenous Djabugay people. The spectacular Barron Falls, further upstream, are considered a sacred site. The famous Kuranda Railway and Skyrail Cableway also traverse sections of the gorge. The rapids are up to Grade 3.

This heart thumping ride spears through The Barron Gorge National Park and the World Heritage-listed Wet Tropics. In the calmer sections you will get to enjoy the ethereal beauty of the worlds oldest rainforest and waterfalls from a unique waterline perspective. During the day you will also discover why the Barron’s rapids have names such as ‘Rooster Tail’, ‘Cheese Churn’ and ‘Hells Gate’.

All you need to bring is lace-up shoes (that WILL get wet), swimming costume and towel (you will need to have your swimming costume already on when you are picked up), a spare change of clothes and don’t forget the 15+ sunscreen. You will be provided with safety equipment, including life jacket, helmet and spray jacket, as well as light refreshments after the trip while viewing the day’s photos.

Australian Whitewater Rafting Grading System: Grades do vary when water levels vary. As a generalization grades tend to go higher as water levels increases because of the steep nature of river gradients in this country. These grades are referred to as the NORMAL grade. Below are the general characteristics of the six grades of whitewater.

The Barron Gorge is graded rapids up to 3.

RAPID GRADE (1) Rapids are small regular waves.
RAPID GRADE (2) Rapids with regular medium sized waves (less than 1 meter) RAPID GRADE (3) Rapids with reasonable size waves (1-2 meters) with a need to hold on at times.

We had a lovely evening. The staff where great, the food was good and the entertainment was excellent. Perhaps the lady who confirmed our booking could have told us that the pier was only a short walk across the park opposite our motel. But it was a lovely walk home too.

Oman tourism bucks global recession Oman

Oman tourism bucks global recession

Camel Caravan in the Sahara DesertThe Sultanate’s tourism industry has shown resilience in the wake of the global slowdown and the flu scare, according to a Standard Chartered Bank (SCB) study, The Times of Oman said today.

According to the paper, “the SCB report says the number of tourist arrivals over the first five months rose 17.5 per cent as compared to last year. The study also reports a 3.9 per cent rise in revenue.”

With its economy diversifying, the Sultanate is increasingly banking on its tourism sector. “The diversification strategy of tourism is paying off. Despite the crisis, early indicators are encouraging,” Philippe Dauba-Pantanacce, economist, Standard Chartered Bank told the paper.

Compared to other GCC nations, Oman is ahead in terms of attracting tourists, industry figures said. “The arrival figures have so far been encouraging. We have managed to retain our share,” Mahesh Ramamurthy, manager, Bahwan Tours told the paper.

“The future looks promising as there has been a rise in inquiries for travel in October to December. With Ramadan ending in third week of September, we can expect a lot of tourists by October,” he said.

The push from the government, especially the Tourism Ministry, has given the sector a boost. The government has plans to spend $17bn, a 10 percent increase in public spending, this year, it was reported.

We had the best time here at the Tamaki Maori Concert and Hangi. It was one of the highlights of our whole NZ experience. Out bus driver who was part of the whole experience was amazing! Entertaining, informative, funny and a whole lot of fun. The ceremony was very interesting and the whole experience certainly opened my eyes to a culture I knew very little about. I have come away more open. The food was delicious and so much of it. You won’t come away hungry from this one! The village is set up so you can see more of the tradition and how things were done. There are a couple of little shops so you can bring some of the experience home. I had 2 teenage sons with me and they loved it just as much as I did. The bus ride back to the hotel again with Mark was a whole lot of fun and you really feel like part of the experience and that you are really valued. I couldn’t recommend this more highly. Excellent!!! Well worth the money and also not having to worry about driving there and back as you get picked up from wherever you are staying in Rotorua. Again, excellent!!

We prayed for a perfect day, and got one! The weather was perfect, the seas were calm, and the water was crystal clear. The reef and the fish were amazing! The boat experience was great! The team was truly professional; they made you feel safe and comfortable, and tried to ensure you had a bit of fun along the way. I would highly recommend this tour. The only disappointment was that we couldn’t have a beer or glass of wine on the return trip, as they’d had their liquor license suspended recently due to some incident with a rude client. Hopefully that’ll be cleared up soon. Either way, it was a fabulous day, and one of the highlights of our four week, three country trip!
