Sophia was there to meet us as soon as we walked out of the airport – w/ our name on a sign. Very professional and surprisingly, we paid for a Sedan, but d/t inventory received a stretch SUV. Great upgrade at no charge to us. On our departure, David was there on time, and again very profession. Despite it being on our way back to the airport, he gave us some great information about the island and some great places to eat. I would definitely use them again and recommend them.

This is a 3 hour tour of the harbour. Plenty of good food at dinner time the first hour, but it was slow in the middle of the trip sailing around the harbour area at night after dinner with no entertainment. The last hour had good entertainment and was fun.

The pickup times 8:15am and 12:15pm. We were unable to get off the ship until right at 8:15am and missed the shuttle, however the staff at were helpful and rescheduled us for the 12:15 shuttle. The ship leaves port early and you must be back on time, the trip had to be cut a few hours short to our big disappointment; however they did make sure we were back in time to get back on the ship. The trip is well worth the money, it was an awesome experience and in the future we will be doing it again. I would recommend this trip to anyone, the only draw backs are the pick up and drop off times being so close to the time the ship docks and sails.

Anantara Resorts to build luxury spa in Sri Lanka

Minor International, which owns and operates spa resorts across Asia under several hotel brands, has acquired an 80.1 per cent stake in Sri Lankan hospitality company Cyprea Lanka in a deal said to be worth over UK£14 million.

Minor International PLC is one of the largest hospitality and leisure companies in the Asia Pacific region with over 1,000 restaurants and 27 hotels and resorts. From its founding in 1978 with a single beachfront resort in Pattaya, the Company has expanded to include hotels and resorts under the Anantara, Four Seasons, Marriott, Elewana and other brands in Asia, Indonesia, the Middle East and Africa.

This new agreement means that Minor I’ntl now has control of Cyprea’s assets, which include the Kani Lanka Resort in Sri Lanka – as well as adjacent land already primed for an Anantara-branded spa resort development.

Minor International chair and CEO William Heinecke, said: “The investment enriches our foothold in Sri Lanka, a destination that we view as offering immense potential.

“The specific location of the pending Anantara property offers a perfect fit with the brand’s promise of immersing story collecting travellers in the world’s most enchanting settings through unique discovery experiences, underpinned by true connoisseurship and luxurious, heartfelt hospitality.”

It first entered the Sri Lankan market in 2007 after it acquired a 19.9 percent stake in Serendib Hotels.

Sri Lanka tops online flight and holiday search says…

Leading holiday destination finder and budget travel website WhichBudget.com, has reported significant increases in flight and holiday searches for the top destinations in the Post Office Travel Money’s Long Haul Holiday Report 2010.

Sri Lanka, which topped the value rating this year, received 18% more flight search requests from January to September 2010 compared with the same period in 2009, while second placed Mexico recorded a 38% increase. Last year’s leader Thailand still reported a 17% increase in search requests, demonstrating the destination’s continued appeal despite the Thai Baht strengthening by 12.7% and political unrest earlier in the year.

Sri Lanka has made huge strides forward as a holiday destination after the army defeated the Tamil Tigers in May 2009, bringing to an end 27 years of ethnic civil war. The country is a holiday makers paradise which is relatively unspoilt by mass tourism and representing value for money not seen anywhere else in the region. If you love the tropics Sri Lanka is definitely the place to go, says Neil Holms, director of marketing at Tropical Destinations.

Gulf Air flights to Sri Lanka re-launched

Ties between The Kingdom of Bahrain and Sri Lanka were further bolstered yesterday with the re-launch of a new flight route for Bahrain based Gulf Air.

The first scheduled Gulf Air flight from Manama to Colombo (Sri Lanka) in eight years departed Bahrain International Airport last afternoon.

Gulf Air chief executive officer Samer Majali was joined aboard the flight by company officials, representatives of Bahrain Civil Aviation Affairs (CAA) and Bahrain Airport Company as well as members of the media.

Ten services per week between Bahrain and Colombo have been added to Gulf Air’s schedule, which shows a sudden and growing demand by middle eastern tourists for holidays in Sri Lanka.

GF flight 0062 will take-off from Bahrain at 1pm on Sundays and Tuesdays and arrive in Colombo at 9.05pm local time. Return flights will depart Sri Lanka at 9.50pm on the same days and should touch down at 11.55pm.

Gulf Air’s Wednesday, Thursday and Friday schedules will now feature an 8.40pm service from Bahrain to Colombo, with flights in the other direction departing at 5.30am on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays.

Mr Majali said there were great business and tourism opportunities for both countries.

“The country is back in full action with its economy springing back to its dynamic past,” he said.

“I see there is a huge business and tourism opportunity for both countries as we recommence services.”

Colombo is the first of four destinations to be added to Gulf Air’s schedule between now and the end of the year, with Basra set to come on line later this month, Isfahan in Iran early next month and Addis Ababa in December.
