Sri Lanka reports sharp rise in UK tourists England

Sri Lanka reports sharp rise in UK tourists

flickr_polonnaruwa_sunset_srilankaUK visitor numbers to Sri Lanka have swelled by an incredible 51% in July 2010 compared with the same period in 2009, according to the latest figures released by the Sri Lanka tourism promotion board.

The country’s tourist board says the change in the British Home Office Travel Advice, lifting all travel restrictions to the country, and also the UNESCO’s decision to add an eighth Sri Lankan wonder to its list of World Heritage Sites has helped to boost visitor numbers.

Sri Lanka has everything to offer the British tourist, with superb beaches and cheap but classy beach hotels a plenty, and with easy options to tour the island and discover her awesome wildlife or cultural heritage, Sri Lanka presents a perfect paradise for the traveller looking for peace, tranquillity and a tropical holiday in sheer breathtaking beauty. The island is truly a gem of a destination, and has attracted visitors to her shores since the dawn of time.

After the end of the 30 year civil war last May (2009), the British Foreign and Commonwealth Office has lifted all travel restrictions to Sri Lanka, deeming it safe for UK tourists to explore the whole country.

The lifting of the travel restrictions comes at a time when Sri Lanka’s Tourism Promotion Bureau is keen to encourage visitors to the newly re-opened areas on the eastern shores of the country, with remote and unspoilt beaches such as Arugam Bay, Nilaweli, Pasikuda, Kalkuda and Trincomalee, and a superb array of wildlife at Yala National Park on the south-eastern shores, many feel that Sri Lanka is well set to become Asia’s next big destination.

Relaxing day trip. Excellent guide. Monastery is beautiful and guide was outstanding. Restaurant service was slow and I would recommend grabbing a snack on the boat and spending the free time touring the gardens.

Tour guide was extremely knowledgeable and upbeat. She sparkled with her enthusiasm for the city. She has very clear pronunciation and could very easily be understood. But the main reason for the rating, there was sufficient time to actually see some museums and other sites that I came to Salzburg for. The lake area was very nice, but if so much of what is pointed out is dealing with the film “The Sound of Music” then ride by the church so we see a very clear view of it, maybe even take 20 minutes to go inside. But I loved the trip and would recommend it highly to friends.

Likely to Sell-out! – An Evening in Schonbrunn Palace: Palace Tour, Dinner and Concert regularly sells out weeks in advance. Book ahead of time to avoid disappointment.

Schonbrunn Palace, the former summer residence of the imperial family, is considered one of the most beautiful baroque palaces in Europe. The Habsburgs resided here the better part of the year in numerous rooms for the large imperial family in addition to representational rooms. Emperor Franz Joseph, who later married the enchanting Sisi and reigned from 1848 to 1916, was born here in 1830. The monarch spent his last years entirely in the palace, which became the property of the new Republic of Austria only two years after his death. Today, the palace is part of UNESCO’s cultural heritage due to its historic importance, its unique grounds and its splendid furnishings.

There are four ticket categories to choose from: VIP, A, B and C, referring to the front, middle and rear of the auditorium respectively.

VIP guests enjoy preferred seating at the concert and will be served a glass of sparkling wine during the intermission.

Schonbrunn Palace Tour:  This romantic tour of the imperial apartments starts behind a massive door at the top of the Blue Staircase. It begins in the west wing of the palace, with the apartments of Emperor Franz Joseph and his wife, Elisabeth, which are furnished in 19th-century style, and continues through the state rooms in the central wing, also known as the State Wing. From there the tour proceeds to the richly-appointed guest apartments. The Franz Karl Apartments, which were occupied by Emperor Franz Joseph’s parents, Archduchess Sophie and Archduke Franz Karl, conclude the tour.

It is a self guided tour accompanied by an audio-guide (German, English, French, Italian, Spanish, Russian, Japanese, Polish, Czech and Hungarian). During the winter, we recommend guests start the tour at 4:00pm at the latest. During the summer, please start your tour before 5:00pm. The tour lasts approximately 1 hour. You may take this tour at any time during the palace’s official hours. Please note, we do recommend taking the tour before your dinner and concert at Schonbrunn Palace to appreciate the full royal experience!

Cafe-Restaurant Residenz Dinner:  Culture and fine cuisine are an excellent combination! The restaurant is located in the Ehrenhof (“Court of Honor”), adjacent to the palace’s main entrance. An elegant three-course candlelight dinner awaits you. In summer, dinner will be served outside in the garden terrace. The menu is subject to change, and vegetarian dishes are available upon request (at time of booking).

* Appetizer: Salmon with a twist
* Main Course: Fillet of Turkey with green pepper sauce served with grilled cherry tomatoes and duchess potatoes
* Dessert: Chocolate mousse from Landtmann’s fine pastry shop served with a fruit sauce

Schedule

Departure Point: Go directly to Schonbrunn Palace Orangery

Departure Time: Dinner begins at strictly 6:30pm, and concert doors open at 8:00pm for 8:30pm start – We recommend taking the self-guided walking tour before your Schonbrunn Palace dinner and concert to appreciate the complete Schonbrunn Palace experience.

Schonbrunn Palace is open daily from:
o 8:30am – 4:30pm (November – March)
o 8:30am – 5:00pm (April – June and September – October)
o 8:30am – 6:00pm (July – August)

Return Details: The evening concludes at approximately 10:15pm at Schonbrunn Palace. After the concert, taxis will be available right outside Schonbrunn Palace Orangery. The subway runs until midnight in five to eight-minute intervals.

The Concert was amazing and we could have stayed another hour. Enjoyed very much. The dinner was very good and probably better than we had expected. However, the tour…..we could not find the Orangery and when we finally did we were told to walk back to the Palace for the tour so we did walk back only to be told that it was now closed. We were very disappointed about that and the closing time should have been made plainer on the information we were given.

We were met by the driver just as we hopped off the train which was very helpful in a place we visit for the first time, the driver also helped with the luggage. The minibus was not in a great condition as expected for the price paid since the hotel is only a few minutes drive from the rail station. But anyhow better than trying to get a taxi.

We were very glad we had pre arranged the arrival transfer. Although our scheduled plane was late in leaving the UK the driver, through the company, knew the plane would be late arriving and was still at the airport with our surname on display. He didn’t complain at all. He was polite, pleasant and very helpful. The car was neat, clean and tidy.
