This had amazing views from the Eagle’s nest top. If you aren’t at the top.. you’ll miss something! Our guide spoke very fluent English, and had mammoth knowledge. We did an upgrade to the full day tour 8 hrs, which includes Eagel’s Nest, Salt mines and KonningSee lake. I would recommend that, if you have the time.

We LOVED this show and dinner. It was great to have the singers and musicians performing together…this was a surprise to us, we’d thought it was only musicians playing instruments…both were fabulous! The dinner was really great too. The only thing that was disappointing was the time it took to get our bill settled. We were there until after 11pm.

Sri Lanka gets 8th World Heritage Site – Super…

The World Heritage Committee (WHC) at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO) has decided to add a mountain range in Sri Lanka’s hill country to the World Heritage List.

The World Heritage Committee holding its 34th session in Brasilia from 25 July to 3 August said today it has decided to add the Central Highlands of Sri Lanka considered as a super biodiversity hotspot.

The added hills region in the south-central part of the island includes the Peak Wilderness Protected Area, the Horton Plains National Park, and the Knuckles Conservation Forest.

Describing the Sri Lanka’s highlands the WHC said the “montane forests, where the land rises to 2,500 metres above sea-level, are home to an extraordinary range of flora and fauna, including several endangered species such as the western-purple-faced langur, the Horton Plains slender Loris and the Sri Lankan leopard.

The World Heritage List now boasts 892 sites worldwide of which 8 are found in Sri Lanka.

Sri Lanka at forefront of wildlife conservation efforts Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka at forefront of wildlife conservation efforts

srilanka_wildlifeA popular Sri Lankan tourist attraction and wildlife sanctuary, the “Uda Walawe” National Park, has been recreated in an elephant exhibition in Twycross Zoo in the UK. The Sri Lankan themed habitat opened recently.

The new AED 5.6 million (£1 million) Asian elephant habitat and walkway “Uda Walawe” was opened by the High Commissioner for Sri Lanka, His Excellency Justice Nihal Jayasinghe.

“The opening highlighted the importance of the wildlife conservation efforts Sri Lanka is undertaking and marked the launch of a unique zoological and cultural attraction in the United Kingdom,” said Heba Al Mansoori, Middle East Director of Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau (SLTPB) based in Dubai. “I laud the efforts of Twycross Zoo to create a piece of Sri Lanka in the UK and encourage people to visit the beautiful destination and see for themselves the conservation efforts in the country.”

“Most Zoo’s have themed elephant habitats which reflect Thailand, Burma, Vietnam or India. Twycross Zoo will be the first in the world to theme a Sri Lankan elephant habitat. Sri Lanka is a country which has produced the world’s first and the largest elephant orphanage at Pinnawela and made the conservation of the largest mammal on land and planet earth a priority, creating many protected areas for animals. We have drawn on the knowledge and skills of our zoological consultant Vasantha Nugegoda, from Design for Life to help design this exhibit.”

The entrance to Uda Walawe is a typical authentic farmer’s tree hut. Inside the hut are information panels on the distribution of elephants in Sri Lanka and Asia. Beyond this is a meandering forest trail which guides people to a Sri Lankan village school. The school has a range of religious, cultural and elephant artefacts. Colourful information boards are prominent that highlight Sri Lankan wildlife and tourism. Large screen film footage will be playing showing elephants on festival parade from Sri Lanka. This festival is called Esala Perehera and takes place in Kandy and is a Buddhist summer festival unique to Sri Lanka. In the corner sitting pretty is a life size ceremonial elephant dressed in full parade robes.

When you leave the village school the forest trail then continues to a wooden bridge over a water lily pool, which allows close quarter views of the five elephants. The inner habitat is identical to Uda Walawe National Park, with a large lake, trees, rocks and sandy areas. At this point you will feel immersed in the exhibit. Following the trail, visitors will reach a divide in the path. The lower trail has been designed for less able visitors, whereas the other route meanders past a higher viewing area leading up a high mountain.

Uda Walawe will promote the conservation of the Asian elephants and act as a shop window for crucial wildlife conservation programmes in Sri Lanka. Uda Walawe is the name of one of Sri Lanka’s national parks, in part set up to provide a sanctuary for many wild animals. Approximately three hundred elephants are believed to permanently reside there. The sanctuary is also home to water buffalo, water monitor lizards, sambar deer, monkeys and the occasional leopard. It is an important site for unique bird species. Sensitive and well managed eco-tourism is an important source of income for local people in Sri Lanka and provides an incentive to continue to protect the wildlife.

Suzanne Boardman, Director of Twycross Zoo said, “We are delighted that our visitors will be able to experience a taste of Sri Lanka, as well as learning about the cultural and historical aspects of this wonderful country, including the important role that the domesticated elephant has had on the country. Our aim is for this exhibit to forge strong links between the UK and Sri Lanka, particularly with regard to tourism.

The opening of this new exhibit promotes the need to conserve this important species globally and highlight the importance of elephants in Sri Lanka. It is our ambition to encourage visits to the wildlife areas of Sri Lanka and to share with our visitors the magical aura of Sri Lanka. It is our desire to create a little piece of Sri Lanka in the UK and an opportunity for visitors to learn about and also visit Sri Lanka to see how beautiful this country is.” Uda Walawe is open to all visitors from Thursday 29th July 2010.

Tourism a leading industry in Sri Lanka Sri Lanka

Tourism a leading industry in Sri Lanka

Visit_Sri_Lanka_2011_logoTourism will be the leading industry in Sri Lanka due to the rapid increase in the number of tourist arrivals said Chairman, Sri Lanka Tourism, Dr. Nalaka Godahewa at the Graduation ceremony of the Sri Lanka Institute of Tourism and Hotel Management (SLITHM) in Colombo on Tuesday.

Dr. Godahewa said unlike certain industries, tourism does not depend on foreign assistance for its sustenance. Nature has gifted a salubrious climate, plush landscape and bio-diversity to attract a large number of visitors to the country annually.

“The unmatched service standards offered to visitors make the destination more attractive and a country that should be visited.

The tourism industry needs more trained personnel in hotels to retain the reputation of the leisure sector”, he said.

Tourism is the fourth major foreign exchange earner in the country and the largest employer on the globe. The number of people employed in the tourism sector across the globe exceed 3.5 million. SLITHM presented awards to 108 graduates and diploma holders at its 32nd Graduation Ceremony. Many of the awardees had gained employment in leading hotels in the country and overseas.

Dr. Godahewa said the tourism industry has revived and the demand for qualified hoteliers is high. Graduands should continue to study, be experimental and innovative at their workplaces.

Managing Director, Aitken Spence Hotels, Malin Hapugoda said that the tourism industry needs around 18,000 hotel rooms in addition to the current number of rooms to cater to the tourist arrival target of 2.5 million by 2016.”There will be a dearth of qualified hoteliers in three to four years and there is a need to have more professionals in the leisure industry”, he said.

Director General SLITHM, Dr. Suranga Silva said steps have been taken to affiliate more institutions into the training program and conduct courses in foreign universities. “Sri Lanka is in the midst of becoming a knowledge hub in the region. The labour force of our country represents the educated manpower in South Asia and therefore Sri Lanka is not far from becoming the wonder of Asia”, he said.

Sri Lanka hill capital Kandy comes alive this August Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka hill capital Kandy comes alive this August

kandyThis time the world’s eyes will be on Kandy as it gets ready for another Esala Perahera procession. Furthermore, Kandy itself is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and Sri Lanka’s last royal capital. While also being the hill capital of our country, Kandy is the most famous for its Temple of the Tooth, the Dalada Maligawa and a host of temples around the town.

While Kandy can be referred to as a ‘city’ it is indeed a sort of bustling town in a valley where buildings in the city itself don’t exceed more than three storeys. The Dalada Maligawa is the main attraction and also the most sacred Buddhist establishment in Sri Lanka where the Buddha’s Tooth Relic is kept. Built in the 16th century but improvements and additions have been made to this structure until the fall of the Kandyan kingdom with a golden canopy added recently in the aftermath of the LTTE bombing about 10 years ago. Daily rituals are being carried out at various offering times in the shrine and a dress code applies for entering the temple.

The magnificence has been enhanced by the octagonal pavilion. Adjacent to the Dalada Maligawa are three of the four major Hindu shrines taking part in the Kandy Perahera. These shrines are dedicated to Gods Vishnu and Natha and Goddess Patthini. The fourth shrine is further towards the town. Visitors to these shrines could witness the Hindu religion customs though most of the worshipers today are Buddhists. Hindus taking part in the Buddhist pageant is a good example of the Sinhala and Tamil co-existence that lasted for centuries. Four of the last Sri Lankan kings were of South Indian origin.

Kandy is surrounded with many major Buddhist temples. On the shores of the lake are Malwatta and Asgiri temples. Fine painted murals of Buddhist stories in these temple buildings are a good example of the arts in the Kandy period while paintings of the Hindagala temple at Peradeniya are of the 7th century. The Lankatilake temple is a magnificent building built on rock at a scenic location which also has fine paintings. Once a pleasure gardens of a Kandyan Queen this land is the Royal Botanical gardens of 40 hectares which is a beautiful park with numerous tropical foliage and the best orchids in the island.

Situated around Kandy is the Gadaladeniya Temple which is a 14th century temple, influenced by South Indian architecture and built on a rock. Further on, is a highly preserved UNESCO site called Embekke where intricate wooden carvings of the 14th century shrine is dedicated to God Kataragama with a Buddhist temple nearby.

One of the stunning things to see in Kandy is the Esala Perahera.

Kandy is also a good source of souvenirs or to experience many cultural performances at it’s various hotels in the city. From the cultural perspective, Kandy holds a good cultural show at the Kandy Arts Association (daily at 5pm) and you can get a feel to Kandyan drumming and dancing.

Also, don’t forget to get your arts and crafts from the various handicrafts around the town which is a memento of your visit to Kandy!

Belgium tour operator to start weekly charters to Sri Lanka Belgium

Belgium tour operator to start weekly charters to Sri…

Sri Lanka tourism got a boost last week when Jetair, one of the leading tour operators in Belgium, introduced Colombo as a new winter destination, and said it will operate weekly charter flights from Brussels from October 2010.

The formal announcement was made at this year’s ‘Jetair Fly summer road show 2010’ held at the Event Lounge – Brussels attended by more than 600 travel agents. Introducing Sri Lanka, Bart Brackx CEO of Jetair NV said “despite the economic crisis the Belgian travel market is expanding and as a tribute to the Belgian traveller we are introducing the South Asian destination”.

He expressed confidence that more Belgian travellers will choose Sri Lanka this winter which will add a novel experience to their life. He said Jetair NV. has offered their clients 3 travel packages ‘initiatique ideal’ tour (3 days tour and 4 days in a beach resort), ‘Beauté naturelle inégalée’ tour (11 days tour and 3 days in a beach resort) and ‘Sri Lanka Classique’ (8 day tour for small groups) with their local partner, Aitken Spence Hotels in Sri Lanka, according to a statement issued by the Sri Lankan embassy in Brussels.

Sri Lanka’s Ambassador to Belgium, Luxembourg and the EU Ravinatha Aryasinha who was the special guest of honour at the launch, noted that “while overall tourist arrivals to Sri Lanka grew by 48% in the first six months of 2010 over the corresponding period the previous year, arrivals from Belgium was almost 60%”.

Noting that “despite the absence of a direct flight connecting the capitals, Belgium has been a country which sent visitors who have grown fond of Sri Lanka, who travelled there several times and were largely high spending,” the Ambassador said “the decision taken by Jetair to commence direct charter flights to Sri Lanka is not only a huge boost to the marketing of the destination in the BENELUX region, but will also add to the numbers that will be able to visit the island”.

Ceylon Continental Hotel goes big on 5-star comfort Sri Lanka

Ceylon Continental Hotel goes big on 5-star comfort

Ceylon-Continental-Hotel-Colombo-Sri-LankaCeylon Continental Hotel is upping the stakes in 5-star comfort with a major face-lift that includes the creation of an exclusive lounge styled-club called ‘The Chairman’s Lounge’ under a Rs. 1 billion investment, officials said.

“The Chairman’s Lounge will be an exclusive lounge which will be designed to attract the crème of the corporates. It will have the ideal atmosphere to discuss business,” Upul Gamage, Director /General Manager, Ceylon Continental Hotel told the Business Times.

The upgrade will be done on a 11-point plan and will include the complete refurbishment of the rooms, reception lounge, gym and the inclusion of new restaurants.

More emphasis will be given to the suites being refurbished. Out of the 190 rooms, 35 will be suites, the highest percentage of suites in any hotel in the city. These will all be business suites equipped with Fax, Wi-Fi and printer, meeting the requirement of a business traveller. “We will also have two floors dedicated to the business club which will be equipped with everything a business traveller needs,” he said.

In addition to the Coffee Shop and the Indian Restaurant, three more restaurants will be added supplemented with the club lounge on the ninth floor. The ‘Chairman’s Lounge’ will host an exclusive bar which will serve a wide variety of choice liquor with an outside area for cigars designed as a place to do business, Mr Gamage said.

The public areas will be modified on the same lines making the present reception area a business lounge with three levels of seating. Mr. Gamage also said that “upgrading of the hotel will add value to the selected segment of the market. Our target is to serve 80 % of our business to the corporate and the business traveller with the balance to the leisure sector.”

Most business travellers book into a hotel either on line or reservations being made by local partners. Around 70% of these business travellers are booked in through their local partners, he said, adding: “They are the ones who decide”.

This is why, he noted, the ‘Chairman’s Lounge’ and the Rooftop restaurant will all be created to first cater to the local corporate who when they find they are comfortable would naturally use Continental for their business partners as the preferred hotel. (By Chanaka de Silva)

Tourists from Bahrain flock to Sri Lanka – Arrivals surge 142 percent Sri Lanka

Tourists from Bahrain flock to Sri Lanka – Arrivals…

flickr_polonnaruwa_sunset_srilankaMs Heba Al Mansoori, Middle East Director of Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau.

Sri Lanka Tourism Promotion Bureau’s (SLTPB) Middle East office reported an enormous surge in the number of Bahraini travellers to Sri Lanka, as arrivals rose by an unprecedented 142% in the first six months of 2010 compared to the same period last year, according to statistics compiled by the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority. The total number of travellers from the Middle East region reflected a similar upsurge with arrivals increasing by 102% over the same period.

“Regardless of apprehensions of an unsteady global economy, Middle East’s discerning travellers are spending time and money on travel and Sri Lanka has been one of the preferred destinations of choice with a meteoric rise in tourists during H1 2010,” observed Ms Heba Al Mansoori, Middle East Director of SLTPB.

“We have just closed in on the results of the first six months of 2010 and we’re up 102% as compared to H1 2009,” Ms Al Mansoori said. “While 2009 was when the recovery process started, with the end of three decades of war, the rebound has been robust and rapid and the recovery is being driven and led by the Middle East with strong growth from key markets including the UAE which was up by 209%, Saudi Arabia up by 96%, Qatar by 252% and Kuwait up by 95%.”

Sri Lanka’s tourism industry is resilient and the government is sparing no efforts to revitalize the tourism industry as they recognize that tourism has a key role to play in the country’s economic recovery and stability.

“Our outlook remains positive for the rest of the year as we have successfully built a relationship of trust with both regional consumers and the travel trade and will continue to reap benefits with the gradually improving economic situation,” Ms Al Mansoori stated.

Apart from the Middle East, regions that proved to be a major source market for Sri Lanka and recorded growth in H1 2010 included North America (up by 70%), Western Europe (up by 45%), Eastern Europe (up by 22%), Africa (up by 18%), East Asia (up by 44%), South Asia (up by 53%) and Australasia (up by 44%).

While commenting on SLTPB’s Middle East marketing drive, Ms. Al Mansoori said, “We have had to adapt to the changing needs of the consumers and capitalize on trends such as late booking, increasing use of the internet to look and book by increasing Sri Lanka’s presence in the web domain regionally.”

Ms. Al Mansoori noted that in the Middle East in particular, travelling closer and for shorter periods of time and demanding value for money, seem to have been accentuated during the post crisis period. “The regional outbound market is evolving and inescapably requires changes as we need to know and understand consumers better to be able to market to them,” she said.

SLTPB opened its office in Dubai in May 2008 to maximize the opportunities emerging throughout the Middle East while strengthening support for the travel trade in the region. Since then the Dubai office has co-ordinated all of Sri Lanka’s tourism promotional activities in the Arab markets including exhibition participation, marketing visits, presentations and road shows, brochure distribution, public relations, as well as familiarization visits to the island for influential business and travel journalists. The office also functions as the preliminary contact point and enquiry processing centre for travel trade companies and tourists in the region.

Sri Lanka is now on the threshold of developing to its full potential as a prime tourism destination with diverse offerings for members of the whole family whether it is beaches, shopping, visits to wildlife reserves, relaxing at a spa, or simply enjoying the cuisine.
