This 4WD adventure along the West Coast to Monkey Mia is a must-do short-break experience if visiting Western Australia. For almost 30 years three generations of wild bottle-nosed dolphins have made a ritual of visiting a remote beach at a small settlement called Monkey Mia (527 miles 850 kilometres) north of Perth.

You’ll visit all the highlights of the region, and experience life on a coastal sheep station on your overnight stop.

Accommodation: Accommodation is mostly situated on farms, stations and country hostels. Room configurations vary from 2 to 10 bed bunkhouse rooms with shared toilet and shower facilities. Upgrades available for twin share and single supplement. Properties used may change, however the same standard is guaranteed. If you don’t have your own sleeping bag, one may be purchased for AUD$40 per person.

Meals: Fresh food is prepared where possible, we endeavour to provide a healthy and varied menu. Breakfast is continental style, including toast, cereals, tea and coffee and fruit juice. Lunch is picnic style, including cold meats, salad or sandwiches and fruit. Dinner includes hot main meals and dessert. Many favourites to appear on the menu are camp oven roast, curries, pastas, satays and BBQs, with a variety of desserts. Don’t forget to try the damper!

Vehicles: Tours are conducted in custom built 4×4 vehicles and rugged safari coaches. The vehicles range in size from 5 to 16 seats, with forward facing seats, air conditioning, stereo and PA systems, two way radios and satellite phones ensuring a comfortable tour with medical assistance in remote areas.

The trip was very well organized and moved like clockwork. Our guide was very well-informed and courteous, and even though there were only twelve of us, he did not make us feel he was rushing the tour. The vehicle was also clean, and safety was a clear priority, though the suspension was a bit hard over rough surfaces; of course, it’s a 4WD!

Day 1: Darwin to Kakadu You’ll meet your guide and fellow travellers early as we depart at 7.00am to travel to famous Kakadu National Park taking in some sights along the way including a visit to the aboriginal rock art site at Ubirr with spectacular views over Kakadu. This afternoon you’ll take the Murdudjurl Cultural Tour to learn more about local aboriginal people, Bushtucker and arts & craft. Return to camp for the evening, having dinner around the camp. Day 2: Kakadu After an early breakfast, depart on our big day out to Gunkurdul (Twin Falls) and Barrkmalam (Jim Jim Falls). These falls are in a remote area of the Park only accessible by four wheel drive vehicle, some 70 kilometres off the sealed road via a dirt track. This is an area of incredible natural beauty, and the waterfalls are rainwater fed, therefore after several months without rain (around August and September) it’s possible they may not be flowing. The rock
pools and surrounds are magnificent year round and well worth the journey. Gunkurdul is only accessible by water therefore we take a short boat ride through the gorge to the beach at the base of the falls. After a picnic lunch on the banks of the river, you’ll take the hike (approximately 1 km) through the rainforest to Barrkmalam and its crystal clear waters. Return to the camp for dinner and overnight. Camp: Kakadu Permanent Campsite – Murdudjurl

Day 3: Kakadu to Darwin After breakfast this morning, we cruise the spectacular Yellow Waters, home to a wide variety of bird life and possibly the lurking Saltwater Crocodile. Next we travel to either the crystal clear rock pool and scenic beauty of Maguk (Barramundi Gorge) or to the amazing rock art site of Nourlangie; depending on the conditions. We then take the Arnhem Highway back to Darwin, arriving at approximately 6.30pm.
