Ranweli Holiday Village, Negombo, Sri Lanka

ECO FRIENDLY RESORT | 84 A/C BUNGALOWS

Ranweli Tourist Village, Negombo, Sri Lanka

Ranweli Holiday Village is an eco-friendly resort located on a 22-acre peninsula where mangrove forests and winding rivers converge to meet the sea. Located only 18 km from Colombo’s International Airport, Ranweli is the perfect base to explore the fascinating history, culture and nature of Sri Lanka.

Enjoy a relaxing holiday in the scenic and tranquil surroundings or engage in numerous eco-friendly activities and sports both land and water based. If you wish to explore the flora & fauna in our extensive garden and its environs, Ranweli has many options of guided tours offering valuable insights to the sights and sounds that surround you. Part of Sri Lanka’s bird friendly hotel network, Ranweli has a wealth of bird species for the novice to the keen birder. Also available are a number of cultural trips further a field in which you could also participate.

Ranweli’s architecture blends with the unique and rich natural environment. The serene and idyllic location has been fully utilized in the layout of the land, featuring indigenous flora and fauna, bordering the wide sandy beach on one side, the river on the other.

The land was originally a coconut plantation surrounded by wetlands, mainly mangroves. In conceptualizing Ranweli, the architects used the spacing of the rows of the coconut trees (called the coconut grid by agriculturists) as the discipline for the design. The bungalows, central areas and facilities were built with minimum removal of coconut trees. For each bungalow only one tree was removed and the tree trunks used as pillars in the construction.

The connecting walkways open out into beautifully tended palm gardens leading to the heart of the resort. Architecturally and aesthetically the construction and furnishings of the village blend western standards of comfort and convenience with the traditions of indigenous Sri Lankan culture.

KumbukRiver among the world’s best again

Sri Lanka’s KumbukRiver has been picked among the world’s 10 best eco-lodges, for the 2nd year running by the World Travel Awards.

The 7th Frontier, an ad agency which developed and promotes this eco lodge, said in a press release that KumbukRiver, a 14-acre up-market eco-lodge by the waters of Kumbukkan Oya in Buttala is famous internationally for a spellbinding 40ft elephant edifice which serves as an exclusive villa for visitors. It will vie for the top slot when professionals from over 160,000 travel agents in over 200 countries vote for the Green Awards category at the 15 year-old event hailed as the most coveted awards scheme of the travel and tourism industry.

The nomination by the WTA puts the eco-lodge from Buttala on the world tourism map, not for the first time, with KumbukRiver securing two other international accolades. KumbukRiver was short-listed for an award at the Virgin-Responsible Tourism Awards last year, while Times-Online voted it among the world’s 50 best green places to stay, making KumbukRiver the hottest Sri Lankan destination in the world of responsible tourism, the release said.

Day 1 to Day 6 – GOA

You can extend any of our tours in India with a one week stay in Goa staying in a romantic hideaway on the beach of South Goa:

Stay in an eco resort on an isolated beach in South Goa. Ten simple but beautiful thatched cottages are set around a fresh water lagoon overlooking the Arabian Sea. The restaurant is built on a cliff edge, where you can hear the sound of flowing water going into the ocean. A perfect place to relax.

Goa
The former Portuguese colony of Goa boasts a coastline with some of the world’s most beautiful beaches, palm fringed rivers moving lazily down to the Arabian Sea, lush scenery with paddy fields, mango groves, whitewashed villas and easy-going hospitable people. Evidence of Goa’s glorious past can be seen in the unique Indo Portuguese style of its magnificent baroque churches, its stately ancestral mansions and its historic forts. The churches of Old Goa, and the old Portuguese town of Panjim, now Goa’s capital city, make for a worthwhile optional excursion. It is renowned as a world class tourist destination not only for its culture and heritage but also for its flora and fauna due to the proximity of the Western Ghat hills.

Goa is famous for its relaxed lifestyle. Tourism is the primary industry here and the infrastructure of family-run restaurants, friendly cafes and bars that line the roads and beaches promotes a lively atmosphere.  For the active it is possible to rent bicycles or motorbikes, or hire taxis, to explore this beautiful small state.

The cuisine is particularly renowned. This area has attracted many international restaurateurs, with establishments that serve a variety of different cuisines. Try prawn balchao, a pickled prawn/shrimp dish that is both sweet and hot. Or a vindaloo curry, in all its spicy glory. Coconut pancake for dessert is the perfect combination of western and Indian cuisines. The night bazaars also offer a fantastic selection of dishes, from crisp fried calamari, to hand-rolled plum sushi.

Day 7 – DEPARTURE DAY

ECO LODGE & HEALING GARDEN | 5 PAVILION VILLAS

Galapita Lodge & Healing Garden, Buttala, Sri Lanka

“Why go to heaven when you can come here”
Tashi – 10 year old Tibetan boy Feb 2006 – Guestbook

Galapita Healing Garden is one of those rare and magical places that seems to exist outside time as though the world only revolves around its boundaries as described by T.S. Eliot.

At the core of Galapita is a waterfall spilling into a gorge sculptured by the river of gems. The Galapita Lake and the paddy fields are beautifully laid before a stunning backdrop of Galapitagala ‘Rock upon a Rock’ in the nearby Yala Wildlife Reserve.

Cradled between the emerald green paddy fields and the river of gems is the two storied ecological abode – Navaratne Maluwa, the jewel of the Navaratne garden.

Across the river bridge over Sambandawala you alight on the Healing Garden. Nestled among the rocks along the meandering river of gems are Sleeping Pavilions, Healing Pavilions and Yoga Pavilions.

Walks on endless white sand paths, nutritious food, meditation and yoga, and the ayurveda treatments at the Galapita Healing Gardens will calm, relax, detoxify and rejuvenate your mind and soul

At Galapita the ecological pavilions and the 60 acre garden layout complete with Lake, Lotus Ponds, Paddy fields, are designed to reflect a contemporary interpretation of traditional Sri Lankan style and architecture. All buildings are constructed with local materials such as stone, wood, mud, and thatched roofs and by local villages. Galapita has adopted innovative environmental initiatives and planted over 10,000 indigenous trees to enrich the bio diversity.

At Galapita, all accessories are laid out for you with the compliments of the house, wicker baskets, canoes, mountain bikes, large inner tubes for floating down the river or binoculars are yours to select. If you request the staff they will guide you on trails of exploration in and around Galapita. Request in advance if you wish to visit any of the wildlife reserves in the vicinity such as Yala, Uda Walawe or Gal Oya or any of the sacred sites.

We recommend a picnic to the magnificent secret garden 45 minutes drive up river. Enjoy a day out by the 50 foot tall pigeon falls and explore other cascading waterfalls, and the surrounding forests. Occasionally you may encounter a snake and some snakes are poisonous, but the most comfort [comes from local wisdom, which] is that snakes try as hard as they can to stay away from us. Be cautious of running carelessly through undergrowth, don’t dig with bare hands under branches or fallen tree trunks. Your best protection is to walk slowly observing your surroundings and stay on the trails. As much as it is about anything, Galapita Healing Garden is about experiencing a relaxed contented lifestyle surrounded by nature, in peace and tranquillity.

Galapita Lodge - Accommodation

ACCOMMODATION – PAVILIONS

Galapita Pavilions are made of natural renewable materials and are nestled among protected pockets of forests, paddy fields, waterfalls and a lake along the meandering river of gems.

The four Sleeping Pavilions named after trees and gems, combine intimate bonding with nature and each other with all traditional comforts too.

DINING

At Galapita they grow their own fruits, rice, vegetables and culinary herbs. The fish and prawns come fresh from the river and the lakes surrounding the retreat and of course the sea off Arugam Bay. With a special selection of authentic yet sensational home grown spices and traditional cooking methods, the chefs serve you vegetarian cuisine cooked to perfection, accompanied with buffalo curd, delicious salads and delightful desserts. There’s also the best Sri Lankan seafood and chicken cooked with spices and herbs from the gardens.

You may ask the staff for any special requests you may have, such as organising a picnic lunch under a Banyan tree or dinner under the stars.

ACTIVITIES

Panning for Gems, Manik Ganga, Sri LankaRIVER OF GEMS

Menik Ganga, the fabled river of gems itself, is your hydrotherapy spa. When it rains in the mountains the river swells and gathers force cascading through the gorge at Galapita. Uncut sapphires and cat’s eyes have occasionally been found rolling seaward along the riverbed. Several fine stones have been unearthed here, including a cornflower blue sapphire weighing 18 carats. If you wish, you may try your hand at “panning” for gemstones.

This traditional mining technique is effective yet low in environmental impact. Any gemstones you find are yours to keep. A wicker basket and a few instructions in the fine art of panning, which the staff will be happy to provide, you will soon be on your way to the river to start panning and perhaps – who knows? – To strike it rich..!

CANOEING
Canoeing on Galapita Lake within the sanctuary, can be a heavenly experience in the moonlight under a canopy of stars, or cruise around during the day among flocks of birds.

Tubing on the Manik RiverTUBING
Large rubber tubes are available on request from the Agasti Lounge – The ideal starting point for tubing is by the Jacuzzi below the waterfall. After several bends and twists the river, descends to where the two branches rejoin together under a canopy of trees, (A ten minute ride). For the more adventurous type, pass the river converging point and ride up to the end of the rapids a further ten minutes away. Buzz can vary depending on the velocity of the river flow. Life jackets & helmets are provided.

HIKING
Sunrise over Galapitagala can be a breathtaking experience with peacocks flying in the mist that envelops at dawn. If you keep following the white sand paths you will be enraptured by the sight of birds, squirrels, bees and butterflies shimmering in the first rays of a breaking dawn.

BIKING
Ride by the Galapita Lake down to the closest village observing the stunning bird life, iguanas and other assorted wildlife. Ride through the sugar cane fields in the evening to “Indikola’ Lake where you chill out and watch the sunset over thousands of white water lilies and exotic bird life. Watch-out for wild elephants.

Ride to “Kuda Oya” [river] in the sugarcane fields for a picnic and river bath. [A three hour round trip]. Once again, beware of wild elephants.

Ride around Galapita Lake, cut across the dirt road to the village temple by the river. There are 7Th century stone sculptures and ruins in the temple gardens.

Safari at GalapitaSAFARI
Dawn to dusk and into the night. You can cruise around the vicinity of Galapita or Yala National Park. You would almost always encounter elephants or if it’s your lucky day, bear or leopard. Request the staff in advance if you wish to visit any of the Wildlife reserves in the vicinity such as Yala, Uda Walawe or Galoya.

Remember to take along your flashlight and mosquito repellent for your night safaris.

YOGA & MEDITATION
Meditation is described as the highest form of yoga. Eliminating stress and providing a sense of peace and tranquillity, Yoga uses the physical body as a vehicle to reach the highest stage of spiritual consciousness. The southern end of the Galapita Healing Garden where the rivers converge, the Yoga Sala is built on the magnificent Asandgala sculptured with seven natural lotus ponds. This pavilion is a wonderful location to meet at dusk to enjoy magnificent sunsets.

Schedules of Yoga activities and visiting Yoga Teachers are available at the SPA. There are daily Yoga classes at the Sala, which are absolutely free.

Check-in/Check-out Time: Check-in is 12.00 noon and Check-Out is 11.00 a.m. An earlier Check-in Time or later Check-out time can be requested on a case by case basis and the resort may agree depending on availability.

 Vil Uyana Sigiriya Sri Lanka

Vil Uyana is in view of the Sigiriya rock fortress, on the flatlands that stretch to the west. The resort integrates into an ancient plan – a plan to irrigate, in the tradition of the Sinhala kings. The introduction of a wetland on reclaimed agricultural lands within the dry zone provides a unique backdrop for this exciting new property, inspired by local and rural traditions.

A private nature reserve provides a haven for wildlife in this peaceful and tranquil setting. The hotel is possibly the first in the world to construct a wetland system with lakes and reed beds to form a private nature reserve. This has allowed for the first time in Sri Lanka rooms built over water. Centred around small lakes and ponds are parklands and woods, designed for leisure; an extension of the ancient practice of planning gardens for pleasure.

A challenge has been overcome for the conversion of dry zone chena lands formed by slash & burn agriculture, to a seasonal wetland (land that is inundated by water for part of the year). The colonization of the new habitats by local fauna and flora has been accelerated by the planting of reed beds and groves of trees.

5 acres of land was used to re-grow paddy using traditional methods of farming and harvesting, providing a new and exciting feature. Rooms have been placed within the paddy fields, thereby giving the guest a unique opportunity of participating in both the farming and harvesting if they wished; yet another first in Sri Lanka! The regeneration of the forested groves creates a feeling of ultimate privacy and seclusion in the Forest Lodges, the largest of the Chalets.

The tastefully designed rooms boast space as its hallmark of luxury. Dine in the privacy of your room or ‘under the stars’ or simply relax and pamper yourself at the Island Spa with a range of treatments to choose from.

THINGS TO DO

Walk With Kings: A brave king’s hideaway during times of war, says one legend & sanctuary to the rag-robe-wearers, a break-away group of monks in ancient times, says another & a fragment of soil from the Himalayas brought by the ape-god Hanuman, says a third.

A morning hike to a mountain steeped in myth and mystery; a site of centuries old ruins; a veritable stone monastery that lies in Ritigala’s dense jungle. In the afternoon guests will experience the royal mode of transportation – on elephant back! Then, an exploration of the forest, cross a river and survey the surrounding villages, as the kings did, on a one-and-a-half hour elephant ride. Finally, a delicious five-course meal will be served up by the poolside. This includes a taste of the local delicacy-‘olu bath’ (water lily rice). Package includes: Transport to Ritigala in an A/C van Bottled water Entrance fees Services of a naturalist Elephant back safari Dinner and wine.

Adrenalin and Adventure: Visitors can tramp through the woods, exploring centuries-old caves and cavernous boulders en route to “Kaludiya Pokuna” (Black water pool) on an early morning adventure. After a picnic breakfast, visitors will be led through the heart-pounding scale of a sheer rock surface to be rewarded by spectacular views of Habarana, Sigiriya and Ritigala.

After they descend, the next stop will be “Namal Uyana” for an hour-long trek through the lush forest reserve in the otherwise arid landscape of Dambulla, to its famed rose quartz deposit.

In the afternoon, a cycle trip along the scenic and yet treacherous route encircling five lakes.

A Habarana sunset can be experienced on the return journey. Each and every one will be greeted at the hotel by a free happy-hour of Jungle Cocktails and Mocktails by the pool-side, with the village snake charmer as the host. While those adventurous enough may seek to share in his passion for handling the python, every one is invited to try the signature arrack cocktail in a coconut shell or make their own cocktails with the hotel’s selection of local spirits and tropical fruit juices.

Package includes: Transport to Kaludiya Pokuna and Namal Uyana in an A/C van – Entrance fees for Namal Uyana, picnic breakfast and bottled water and services of a naturalist. Bike hire and free cocktails during happy hour.

The Fish-er-Way: After a leisurely afternoon, visitors can join the village fishermen at the bank of the lake. With the guidance of the ‘experts’, they may use either the Oruwa (narrow wooden outrigger boat) or wade through the water, to cast the nets. In silence and in complete harmony with the surrounding tranquillity, you will be shown how to cast the nets the traditional way, moving slowly and gracefully amidst myriad water lilies, lotus, and bird species.

On their return, all who participated will be treated to a sumptuous river and seafood dinner by the poolside. The next day, all those up for the challenge can join the fishermen at sunrise to paddle or wade across the lake, skilfully removing the nets and retrieving the catch! The catch is generally shared with friends, as is the local custom. Package includes: Hire of oruwa on both days Services of a naturalist Dinner

Native Cues: A morning bullock cart ride will take visitors through the village of Hiriwadunna, to a banana plantation where ripe bananas can be tasted and savoured fresh. Cross a scenic reservoir by oruwa (traditional boat), its long, narrow shape gliding effortlessly on the water, to visit a chena cultivation, where in the shade of a tree house of mud and thatched palm leaves, the village of Hiriwaduna can be surveyed. On the return journey guests can drop by the house of a native and enjoy aromatic ginger tea and Jaggery. The next stop will be a visit to an authentic local cottage industry to witness the skilful carving of caricatures from old tree roots. Everyone will get a chance to carve his or her own token. Then, a stop at a local kamatha (Paddy field) for lunch, to be treated to delicious local cuisine served on lotus leaves by a village family. Back at the hotel everyone will be treated to a free Ayurvedic treatment of his or her choice at the hotel spa in the afternoon or evening.
