That Kandooma the island is blessed with white sands, azure skies, lush tropical greenery and clear turquoise waters almost goes without saying. To complement this, Kandooma, The Resort, has created services intended to satisfy, engage, entertain, inform, educate and….. luxuriate.

For some this means discovering the world of marine biodiversity or being challenged by a new sea sport skill. For others it will be about getting back in touch with the family, the environment and (dare we say it?) themselves. Parents will be relieved to see their children as happy captives of the kids’ club. Dining options have been developed to offer real choices for today’s more experienced palates.

Kandooma is ready to appeal to discriminating travelers who boldly embrace, seek more from, and celebrate……. life!

Kandooma- Maldives – “Celebrate life, Love life, Live life”

Welcome to Kandooma Island

Kandooma Island lies just 35 km south of the Male International Airport, via a forty minute speedboat ride to the South Male Atoll. 13 hectares in area, It is named after the Kandoo tree which is found in abundance on the island. For guests arriving late at night, the resort also offers the convenience of night transfers to the island.

This tropical paradise isle is favoured because of its close proximity to many excellent dive sites. The Kandooma Channel and Kandooma Caves and Kandooma “thila” (an undersea mount) all contribute to making this area one of the republics’s most sought after destinations for scuba divers.

List of nearby dive sites

For the non-divers, the surrounding clear water offers areas to swim and snorkel. Enthusiastic surfers will be delighted with the reef breaks on the north shore – the east side of the island forms the swell that comes in off the ocean.

Kandooma – The Resort

Kandooma Island is 13 hectares in area (32 acres) or roughly about a 20 minute walk around the perimeter. It is located two thirds down the south eastern edge of the south male atoll and is neighbours to resort islands Cocoa in the north, Biyado in the west and local island Guraidhoo in the south. For a sampling of Maldivian life a visits to Guraidhoo can be arranged.

The resort has 160 villas in four main categories of beach and garden villas, Duplex villas, family villas and water villas. With the exception of the garden villas, all the accommodation has been built around the edge of or on the water. Each villa type has been designed with cool clean lines with white washed timber providing warm texture to the unshod foot. Large picture windows mean that you are only a glance away from the great blue outdoors.

The connected I-pod generation need not fret as the island is completely covered with wi-fi broad band. Didn’t bring your pod? No worries, the islands resident dj’s have about 40 of the things for loan that will be programmed with the kind of play lists you tell them you like.

Did we mention DJ’s? Yes, and they are not just employed to programme I-pods, their day job is to run Radio Kandooma. They’ll be bringing you the news, views on the days weather, activities, birthdays and requests.

Serving “Med-Asian” cuisine Restaurants and bars at Kandooma will offer a fresh new approach to resort dining as it seeks to provide choice in menu, service, environment and price.

Guests coming home will be able to tell tales of margaritas in the lounge, villa side barbeques, wood-fired pizzas by the pool, sunset garnished Mojitos on koimala roof bar, take out fish and chips, Kandooma café buffet, castaway picnics, cappuccino’s at the coffee club and sitting at the kitchen range at Koimala restaurant offering advice to the chefs.

“It’s all about the fish!” as one diver was heard to say. For some, diving will be the only reason they are staying at Kandooma. It is after all located in a prime area. The resort will run dive dhonis to nearby dive sites and speed boats to increase the range of dive destinations. For others it could be to fulfill a lifelong ambition to qualify as a PADI certified diver.

Many will delight in the many other water activities that the resort has worked to develop. These will include snorkeling excursions, light craft sailing, canoeing, windsurfing, kite surfing or even just regular surfing on the close reef break.

It does not stop when you get out of the water. The resort has delighted in developing activities from the traditional volleyball, petanque and five a side foot ball to the slightly off the wall, extreme croquet, bicycle polo and underwater hockey (a legitimate sport with a small but determined following developed by Britain‘s royal navy to develop fitness in their divers).

There are activities to even get you doing things after dinner so you might find yourself guided around the clear night sky by our resident star expert from the koimala roof bar or gaze at a different kind of star like Audrey Hepburn or Humphrey Bogart from the nightly screened black and white classics on the beach.

Once all that is done and all you want is a bit of private space and to ask your muscles for forgiveness, the resort offers the services of an extensive spa with private villas, several treatment rooms and water [aqua] treatment facilities too.

Dining

The focus at the restaurants and bars of Kandooma has been to get the basics right and improve on things from there. The resort claims to make the eating and drinking experience straightforward and unfussy, offering quality through integrity of ingredients. They all say that right? Read on.. Orange juice in the morning will always be just-squeezed, coffee (even in the rooms), will be freshly ground, tea is loose leaf, bread and ice cream will be home made. The classy service aims to be direct and simple; warm and informal; always honest. Choice in price as well as in menus. It all becomes uniquely Kandooma!

Kandooma Café

Breakfast (6.30am to 10.30pm)

Greet the day in the “Big Barnacle”! Wide archways let in the sunshine and atoll views. Also views, news, weather and music provided by the “bananas in the morning” breakfast show on Radio Kandooma Breeze. Fresh Juice, pressed coffee, an international selection of breakfasts and attendant chefs ready to receive instructions on just how easy you would like your eggs over.

Dinner (6.00 pm to 11.00 pm)
The Bright and Breezy big barnacle becomes a warm cave of soft glowing light presenting an intimate mood under the stars visible through the skylight 60 feet above. Chill out sounds of Radio Kandooma Bleu add to this almost surrealistic romantic environment. A banquet of travel inspired Mediterranean dishes spiced with flavours of Asia is supplemented by chefs busily working tandoor ovens, teppan grills and rottiseurs.

Poolside

Lunch (10.00am to 11.00pm)
Relax! It’s too hot to do anything else, except perhaps to decide what to order next from a menu of fresh salads, sandwiches, wood-fired pizza or pick up a choice cut of eye fillet or lamb loin to be grilled by yourself under the shade of a coconut grove, pausing briefly for a sip of cold drink of your choice, chatting to fellow sun loungers. Then it’s back to the shade of the umbrella from where the searing blue of the atoll can best be appreciated.

The Kitchen

[Opening Time :06.30 pm to 11.30 pm]
Some hotels take diners into the kitchen to sit at “the chefs table”. At Kandooma Island Resort they brought the kitchen out and put it in the middle of the restaurant to create an exquisitely elegant dining experience with the best view on the island. Diners can choose to sit in elegant comfort looking out over Kandooma channel, out on the beach, feet in the sand, or engage the chefs in conversation by reserving a seat at one of the two main kitchen counter ranges. The food will be Thai – Mediterranean with a good representation of sea food. About 15 paces away is the wine room where a choice of some 250 wines will see that some indecision will be encountered in selecting a preferred label.

The Deck

[Opening Time :05.00 pm to 10.00 pm]
For a slightly bohemian end to the day walk past the wine room (resist the urge to have a quick browse, you’ll miss the sunset) and up the circular stairs to The Deck. An expanse of Teak planking covering rooftop of The Kitchen liberally sprinkled with low tables, startlingly blue cushions, bean bags and monolithic granite planters of greenery. Having freshly showered off a day of sunshine and saltwater, it is the ideal place to worship a sunset and the excellent Mojitos of the resident cocktail mixologist. After sundown the area is lit entirely by Moroccan lanterns and the stars. Ideal to continue with cocktails and graze at the tapas menu, savouring a thought for what’s to come…

Bokkuraa Coffee Club

[Opening Time :6.30am to 11.00pm]
Boutique coffees and teas are available to go or right there laced with cyan vistas of pool, sea and sky and the clean contemporary lines of the outlet itself. It is a “Buzzy place to enjoy a little bit of the city by the beach as you hear the now familiar hiss and froth of a cappuccino in creation. All fortified by daily changing pastries and homemade ice creams by the coupe or cone.

Take Out and Delivery

[24 hours]
When back from a hectic four – dive day, the only thing you might want to do is flop on the lounger and get a pizza in the comfort of your Kandooma home. Muster up enough energy to drag out the compendium and look up what is available. You have a choice of ordering from a list of simple but utterly tempting bites. You will have a choice of picking it up at the agreed time or having it delivered for a one off price. Plates and cutlery are all in your room. The Resort uses where ever possible reusable containers but where disposable is unavoidable, biodegradable food containers are present. Three different menu styles serve three different times from breakfast, all day and night owl. All depends on which end of the day you live in.

That’s not all.., here are some other menu options

Recreation and Acitivities

Act, accomplish, achieve!

Being lively and engaged is central to the resorts reason for existing, so when it comes to dedicating a department for activity the local experts were always going to do some things a little differently. While diving largely takes centre stage, being almost a dog-paddle to some of the country’s best dive sites, the instructors have developed experiences to tickle any taste. It might be pursuing an adrenaline surge on a surfboard, a mind enriching aqua safari or a reflective moment at a moonlit campfire drinking tea with a Maldivian story teller.

Everything is possible at this resort in paradise.

Diving

The Dive Centre
The Dive Centre is comprehensively equipped to meet the needs of advanced divers but also suitable and thoughtfully set up for absolute beginners. It is run by Euro Divers, a fully accredited organisation operating ten outlets in the Maldives alone as well as operating in several other countries. They will provide multi-lingual instructors to cater for Kandooma’s international guest mix.

For non-divers, it’s an exploration ….
Snorkeling offers a highly portable and simple way of getting to know the marine life. Cocoa Island don’t use cow’s milk, nor genetically tampered soy alternatives, but own blended nut milks. and use honey instead of processed sugars. We also use sea vegetables high in nutrients, including magnesium and pumpkin seed ‘parmesan’ which replaces the flora found naturally in the intestine but is destroyed by cooking. Fish is an important feature on our menus – caught and brought straight to your plate.

COMO Shambhala cuisine is not about deprivation; it’s for people who enjoy their food but want to feel good.

Dive Seasons

During the dry season (Jan – April), currents tend to be strong with excellent visibility (25-40m). Most dives are at the channel entrance or drop offs where all the big fish can be seen, such as large Dogtooth Tuna, Giant Trevally, large schools of Eagle Rays and, of course, sharks. Note some sites are not suitable for beginner divers.

Rainy season (May – Dec) brings rain and tropical storms, but some very good dives for manta rays. Visibility is reduced (10-15m) due to plankton in the water; however, this is also what most marine creatures feed upon. During September there is the chance to see Whalesharks and Hammerheads.

The water temperature remains around 27 to 30 degrees Celsius all year.

The following destinations are just a suggestion of the many settings available for your very own intimate affair:

  • Coconut grove by firelight
  • Wave breakers private dining deck

Naladhu’s own style of pampering begins from the moment you arrive. Upon touchdown at Male International Airport (and clearing customs and immigration formalities), you will be met by your own personal House Master, who will serve as your exclusive concierge, butler and personal assistant for the duration of your stay on this beautiful island. After a warm welcome, your House Master will guide you to the private Naladhu launch. The 13 km ride to Naladhu takes approximately half an hour as you glide over the emerald waters of the Indian Ocean, weaving between some of the Maldives’ famed islands. Seasonal cocktails and snacks, an iPod and sound system with your favourite music are among the elegant trimmings as you are whisked to the paradise of your beautiful, spacious Ocean or Beach House on Naladhu.

Accommodation

Your own island hideaway. Private. Intimate. Created for you. Each of Naladhu’s 19 secluded houses incorporates timeless design, idyllic views and – unique to Naladhu – an unmatched feeling of home. Free-flowing spaces that allow you to drift from one perfect moment to the next. From the expansive bedroom to the classic, intimate comfort of the dressing room, to the open-air bath, steam room and garden rain shower, out to the private plunge pool and gardens and multi-tiered hardwood deck and dining sala, your house abounds in space, beckoning you to explore and uncover the luxurious surprises around every corner.

The largest room in the house, the bedroom manages to be both expansive and intimate, with high vaulted ceilings of free-flowing space, contrasted with cozy corners for reading, lounging, writing or enjoying the house’s home theatre system. White-washed timber wall panels juxtapose brilliant Indian and Sri Lankan motifs and fabrics, hints of local colour.

Naladhu offers two house types;

Beach Houses – facing own stretch of pristine white beach and lagoon side

Ocean Houses – view over the Indian Ocean, with hardwood deck

Bath – Cool hardwood and terracotta floors below and ceiling fans gently whirring above. Unwind in a romantic outdoor bath while gazing out to an endless moonlit sea. Or, cross playful flagstone steps between the dual mirrored vanities to the outdoor waterfall shower, shaded by bougainvillea and frangipani. At the opposite end of the pavilion, by the plunge pool, is the delightful outdoor soaking tub sprinkled with rose petals. Allow all your tensions to melt away with the thermal healing of your private steam room and shower, while you savour the view of the tropical surrounds. Your bath features delightfully aromatic elixirs by L’Occitane, ultra-plush oversized terrycloth towels, scented candles and a daybed for lounging between soaks in the tub. This may become your favourite room in the house – feel free.

Pool – Total privacy. A midnight dip under the stars. Toasting a picture-perfect sunset over the lagoon. The infinity-edge pool is an integral feature of your House – seamlessly blending wood, light, air and water. Sliding doors off the bedroom give way to the clear waters of the pool, as do the hardwood floors of the bath and deck. Meanwhile, the surrounding gardens, lush with native Maldivian flowering plants and island greenery, remind you that you’re firmly ensconced in paradise. Delight in your secluded pool, where the view of the lapping waters melds with the ocean, lagoon and horizon.

Dining

The Living Room is where Naladhu residents come together to enjoy fine wines, conversation, splendid views and sea breezes – and some of the finest dining you may ever encounter on any continent. The Living Room concept features daily table d’hôte menus which change daily based on whatever the chef finds fresh at the market that day. This means you are assured only the best quality ingredients and the chef’s playful fusion of cooking styles to tantalise your taste buds, island style.

Its centerpiece is a glass-walled walk-in wine cellar, stocked with some of the most esteemed (and a few of the most rare) vintages from both the Old and New Worlds – a collection to rival any destination restaurant in any world capital. The staff – including the chef himself – will help you pair the wine with the meal or the meal with the wine, in an effort to ensure that every dining experience is one as timeless as Naladhu.

Or, kick back on your deck at sunset with a platter of the house favourite canapés and a bottle of Krug. Have a favourite that isn’t listed on the menu? Your House Master will see to it that it’s provided – or at least his own creative interpretation.

Intimate Dining – Romance abounds on Naladhu and its spectacular surrounds. Being a bit romantic themselves, the chefs have designed a range of truly unique dining opportunities called ‘Intimate Dining Affairs’, in which they bring their favourite menus to the destination of your choice around the island. Complete with candles, tablecloths, silver ware and all the little touches of perfection, these ‘Intimate Affairs’ offer some of Naladhu’s most precious timeless moments for you both to cherish.

The game fishing launch is outfitted with advanced equipment for the expedition, which is able to handle the weight of the bigger game you’ll be catching. As always, the crew is eager to cater to every whim. Perhaps you’d like a champagne toast or an assortment of evening canapés in between the big-game action. Your House Master and chef can arrange your outing however you please.

Watersports – Kayak to a nearby desert island. Water ski over a placid emerald lagoon. Take in a bird’s-eye view of paradise in a seaplane photo flight at sunset. Try your hand at wakeboarding or surfing on the Indian Ocean. All in a day’s adventure at Naladhu!

You can start your water sports adventures with the complimentary canoes provided for you to enjoy the beautiful (and calm) lagoon fronting the island. For those feeling a bit more adventurous, have a go at windsurfing. Don’t worry if it’s your first try – encouragement comes with a lesson or two that will enable you to enjoy the wind and sea in a new and challenging way.

Surfers will discover that these sparkling islands offer ideal surfing conditions. With a handful of some of the best surfing destinations in the Maldives only a quick launch ride from Naladhu, you’ll never have a better opportunity to try this exhilarating sport.

Expeditions –While most guests to the Maldives skip past Male, Naladhu gives you the key to unlock this fascinating city, one of the world’s most unique capitals.

If you’re searching for tangible local colour to bring home, let the Naladhu launch whisk you away for a day of shopping in the bustling markets of Male. Naladhu’s local guides are always eager to show guests their country’s capital city.
